camping there can be tough- work that part out first- the week before the "rally" can be good. not as crowded and lots to do.

My Pal rides out from Quackertown every year- he rents room in a house from teh same people the last 20 years or more.

When I go, I have a pal who has a place in central city nearby.

Other pals use various campgrounds for tents, trailers or cabins.

a motel room can run hundreds and have a minimum stay- some years ago a pal was headed there for business which happened to be during the rally. he only needed 1 night- a 4 night minimum at the holiday inn at about $400 a night was all he could get...he gave me the other 3 nights.

Just about every interstate route parallels the old 2 lane highway which goes through towns...slower by funner

My route is 2 1/2 days from PHX- 1st day gets me into Southern CO, 2nd day around Cheyenne get there 3rd aft.
KOA's are always easy- good showers to get the bugs off

Mike

Another alternative is to check AirBnB places along the way. Some of these places go for as little as $30 a night. Normally they have good reviews and sometimes even feed you breakfast. Another way to meet some wonderful folks.

Make sure if you camp out there, that you chose a campground that's right for YOU. Some of them are loud party places, and some of them a nice and peaceful.

Next year will be my 4th time riding from Charleston. Usually 4-5 days up and 4-5 days back. Wonderful time. Have never made a reservation while on the road. Been lucky...

I've stayed at:

Katmandu - Has alcohol but no party (this is all me now). 250 a couple basically. It's by the highway so you do hear bikes all night. Wasn't bad. 0 on the free the boobies meter.

Buffalo Chip - about 100 bucks more per person. Bands, entertainment, food, alcohol, + party. Good times but crowded. Noisy at night until like 2 am-ish. About a 5 on the free the boobies meter.

Glencoe - 10 on the free the boobies and Dongs hanging out, basically sodom and gomorrah and camping.

Looking forward for Katmandu again. Bunch of others out there as well.

If you like to ride, get a campground south of Sturgis. Maybe in the actual hills...

Have fun!

We stayed at Creekside which is across the road from the Buffalo Chip.
It's near all the action, but a quite and shaded campground.

I did it twice from MD. First time in 11 on my sporster 883 custom. That was a longer trip 5000 miles 14 states over 20 days our honeymoon. Second time in 15 on my 11 deluxe.
I plan our trips on the bikes and we take a fair number of long distance trips where we camp off our bikes.
My rules on travling there and back. Off the road between 5-6 so we can actually have dinner and grab a few drinks. Around 400-500 miles a day. For sturgis we do it in 3.5 days. So the day we arrive we get there at around 3-4. Which means we have time to set up. My other advice is arrive friday before the rally starts or even thursday if you are camping. That will give you the best spots. We camped the first time at the broken spoke campground (now the full trottle owned pappy something) - and glencoe BUT out by the back gate. Everytime I looked at the chip it just seemed like an overproced mess. We went for one day for a concert both times. Ride the badlands if you can. Have fun. And if you have tall handle bars know you will get a ticket. Also I only camp when we get there and just stay in cheap hotels inroute. I also don't plan those hotels in advance so if we run into traffic or weather we arent locked into a place.
Also in my signature the picture on my deluxe is from the day we road the badlands in 15.

We pack two duffle bags of gear, one of clothes and a cooler on our bikes. Yes they ride fine loaded up. Key is giant duffles so the weight is low.

Glencoe in 15 by the back gate. Our that we pack on the bike is the giant green one a rei kingdom 8 with a garage attached.

Me and my hubby in sturgis.
