I mistakenly took off the very small 1/4 inch hex drive oil plug under and on the bottom crankcase cover of my 07 Night Train. Approximately 1 pint of very black oil drained out. Is this part of the engine oil drainage or do I have to put new oil back in there somehow?
might wanna change your visible userid so you don't start getting **** sent from 1000 spammers!
Hey Reid, lets see if I can explain! My understanding, is that plug is there for the casting of the case? Another story is its for priming the motor with oil, at the Factory! It's in there with Super Duper Red Locktite! How did you get it out? My Scavengers don't use that plug on Softails, only the plug above the drain on the Touring Bikes! I think you still might have a problem? You drained the sump, there is NO oil in there, now you may have an air lock, you definitely have lost your oil pressure? My Scavengers avoid this problem, the clean oil pushes out the Dirty oil? I wouldn't try to start it, till I called Scott at Hillside, & ask his advice? He has the knowledge, not just an opinion? You don't know, what you don't know! Good Luck!
PS, If all else fails, I'd take the oil filter off, & pour a pint of oil into the threaded pipe that holds your oil filter, that will replace the Dirty pint you took out of the plug! Good Luck!
Hi boston Jim. Thanks for your reply. I used a 1/4 inch allen wrench and it popped a little like it had Locktite but it was not very hard to break loose. I did start it after I finished all the oil changing. The oil pressure light went out right away like normal. Rode it about a mile and all seemed OK. If it lost oil pressure, wouldn't the oil pressure idiot light stay on? I guess the easy way to find out if it pumps new oil in there, would be to take it off again and see if another pint of new oil comes out again? I have a shop manual coming Saturday. I'm new to HD and not sure how to get a hold of Scott in Hillside? In the meantime, I will call my local dealer service center and see what they say? Thanks again.
Called the local HD service center and the service rep knew exactly what it was. He stated that the plug is never supposed to be taken out but to just seal the threads and gently snug it down firm but not tight, to avoid cracking the crankcase, of which I did without damage to anything. He stated that the new oil will circulate back in there. Thanks to all for the help and advice.
