I see your delima. The new 18's will not be out until the middle of your trip so that is a wait until you're back. If you want to do it on a touring model you take the plunge into a 17 or buy a leftover 16. You will probably take a pretty big hit on your trade the way the market is right now. I guess buy what makes you happy. Even if they do change them like they did in 07-08 (bastard years for the touring models) there is always someone that will buy it when it's time.

If it were me I would make the switch before the trip with enough time to get through the 1000mile service and work any bugs out of the machine. Logging miles on a touring bike is a lot more enjoyable to me. Lots of storage, a heavier more stable ride and cruise control (although I don't use it much when I want to it is nice).

So are 2017 owners simply sticking with the HD/Screamin Eagle add ons and foregoing any aftermarket goodies that will potentially invalidate their warranty?
If your trip is Aug-Sept I think it makes your decision easy as the 18s will not likely be available in time for your trip. As to adding goodies to the M8 I assume you are speaking of performance mods, this is the first HD that I have purchased with no performance mods being considered after the first 1-2 months. I made some comfort mods seat, bars etc but have no plans for performance mods. For once I'm likely not it like it came

If you have a bike already another option would be to rent a touring bike for your trip. It's to close to 18s coming out, if no changes you can get a good deal on a 17 that will pay for rental.

^^^That!

I've been trying to tell people - the only thing carrying over to 18 is the motor. That's it. No way I would buy a 17. It will be only slightly less worthless than my 14.

I seem to recall an earlier thread on the subject of common frames. We have seen that the Touring frames now have a detachable rear sub-frame, perhaps we already have the 'new' one and it is the other big twins that will change?

As for hiring a bike for 10k miles, I'm not sure what that is likely to cost! Better to put the cash towards a new bike asap, so it is sorted 'just so' in good time for the start of that adventure.

Tough decision.
If Harley releases a big improvement, everybody is going to tell you to wait for a 19 when they will have all the bugs worked out : >)

If you do not like the colors, wait a year....the company will rename them.
