Whenever putting apes on I recommend going with polyurethane riser bushings. Especially when you can get just the bushing part for 7$ at jp and use the stock hardware. When you push or pull apes the height gives you more leverage but also amplifies movement at the base. Where drag bars move a few mm, on apes it's more drastic. I personally don't notice any more vibes than normal.

Has nothing to do with the risers slipping but while your in there might as well.

The extra labor on your part isn't anything to me, but for some guy who comes along later with the same trouble and finds this thread he's gonna think he has to take apart the headlight nacelle to do something that takes 30 seconds, tops.
Thanks, and yes that works for getting at the two lower clamp bolts. I am still glad I took the whole clamp cover off though, it was one of the top bolts that was barely finger tight so it was good that I got at all four of them.

Glad youre ok, this is what sucks about buying a used bike or when someone else does work. He screwed up and you almost paid the price. I whole heartedly agree with Guntoter, thats the clamp. Taller bare = more leverage so it will be easier to loosen, ask any Springer owner.
On a funny side I recently saw an old 60's movie "Hells Angels 69", there was a scene towards the end where a gaggle of bikers rode in to a casino in Vegas to confront the sheriff. One guy pulls up on a chopper and hit the curb, his bars went about 10" forward, he pulled them back and got off the bike without missing a beat. LMMFAO!

I've been known to drill and tap the top clamp an put in a small setscrew like you would find on a plain old pulley. THey have them at Ace . Just don't make it too big. doesn't take much and you don't want to remove too much metal from the clamp.

Yup i have 16 apes. They slipped on me when i hit a big bump in the road. Took the top bar clamp off drilled two holes in it centered over bars far enough out to miss wire feed hole in the middle of rhe bars and tapped theeads for 1/4 20 set screws. Reasemble all bolts with blue thread locker. When you tighten the set screws go tight then loosen and repeat three times. This will set them solid into the bars Cost me $0.98 from Ace hardware Dealer will do it for $100.00 too.
