Is it absolutely necessary to use the clips under the fuel tank when installing new spark plug wires?
i can't for the life of me get my fingers in there at all to clip the middle ones and I wiretied around the horn bracket so either wire isn't touching engine..thx
Yes IMO you do not want the wires to be rubbing against the seams on the tank or another place as it will rub into them.
Depending on the bike if it's a later model touring bike then just remove the tank takes 5 minutes.
It's a bear of a job so I'd recommend that you do it with a cold engine.
I did my 2000 Ultra and the key is to loosen the front gas tank bolt and remove the rear bolt , raise the rear part of the tank and use a block of wood (wrapped in a cloth to protect your paint) to support the tank.
Another suggestion is to have plenty of lighting and some soft or wrapped extension tools to push the wires into the clips. You may also want to use an old blanket as you will be in your butt and/or knees for a while.
I wasted a lot of time trying to get the wire in place before I finally gave up and lifted the tank.
It's also a good time to do some cleaning on your rocker boxes!
Thx guys guess I'm riding as is this weekend then attempt to remove tank next weekend.. it's an 07 roadking so all I have to do is remove the 3 torx bolts then what else?? Thx guys

The external fuel line crossover needs to be addressed unless you're just lifting the tank without removal (I don't miss that on the 08 and laters). Also, unplug the fuel line disconnect on the bottom left as well, and the vent tubes, wiring connectors, etc.

This isn't a direct answer to your questions, but before ya do any wrenching on your bike, you REALLY need a shop manual, preferably the Factory Service Manual (FSM). The interweb is NOT a substitute for that...I've been wrenching on these thangs for decades, and can usually...but not always... puzzle things out, and it's those times that I have questions and need clarification that the FSM more than pays for itself!!!
