Default Cop bikes....

How do you guys feel about buying a used ex-cop bike? A dealer close to me has a ton of them, RK's and EG's, all with around 3K miles. I want an EGand this seems to bea way to save some dough. Thoughts, comments, opinions???

I also have a few questions if anyone can answer them...
1. Can you keep the stock solo air ride seat and add a passenger seat, or do you have to switch to a EG/RG seat?
2. Is there anything on the aftermarket to get rid of the puck style bag latches?
3. Do the cop bikes come pre-wired for the stereo system like the EG standard?

Thanks in advance, everyone!

I to was interested and would have one now had it not been for the 06 Street Glide that ran me down.

1. Yes: http://www.jpcycles.com/productgroup...All&page=1
2. Yes: http://squadfitters.com/Merchant2/me...saddlebagbling
3. Don't know

Be advised if you should wish to add a tour pack some day the police saddlebag lid/hing setup will not open with a civilian tour pack installed.

In 1999 I bought a 1998 RK cop bike with 5800 miles and I was riding it today. I got 42K miles on it and just recently I had some problems with my fuel inj. hot and cold base idle system. Got that fixed and it runs real good.
I painted mine with a 1986 general motors hot rod black and chromed it out, lowered it, put a stage II kitin it and put a set of vance and hines long shots (all on one side) on it. Put me some 1 1/4" x 30" beach bars on it too. Brother it's a sweet bike, and it's paid for!![8D]
I took a set(of your choosing) of chromefuel cap covers and put them on the hockey pucks that are on the bags, looks real good. The insert on the bags (where "police" was at) I'm still looking for something cool to fill that void. I believe you'll be happy with one.

What do these bikes generally go for price wise?

My dealer also does a lot of business in cop bikes. His going price is $11K on RKs and $13k on EGs, with anywhere between 6,000 and 40,000 miles on them. I gave the EGs a real close look, trying to figure what it would take to outfit it for 2 up touring. By the time I was done, the price wasnot that far belowwhat you would pay for a new EG Standard with 96" motor, 6 speed tranny, and a two year warranty.

i have an 05 that i bought with 137 miles on it and LOVE IT!

i have added the pass mustang seat and it looks great!

i like the pucks , but might change those to the button style evenually.

DO IT!

i rode the air ride for a year and was gonna switch it to a 2up but loved the ride and feel and decided to keep it.

Hard to sell later on. Besides the money it takes to civilianize one.

I regret the lengthy post, but buying a police model and comparing it to the cost of buying a civilian bike is an exercise in comparing features and what you want to do with the bike. But first your specific questions. I have an '04 FLHTPI (police model EG) and put 40K on it in two+ years and know a bit about civilianizing them.

1. Mustang sells a passenger pillion that is an exact duplicate of the air ride HD seat covering, about $189 list.

2. I used Southco M1-2A-13-1 chrome flush mount pushbutton latches. Depending on the distributor you buy from they are relatively inexpensive. I paid $10.08 each plus a small amount for shipping. Here's a link:

http://www.southco.com/product/part.aspx?pid=17352

3. The police EG model doesn't have the handlebar radio controls or the audio plug inside the fairing that civilian EG's have. The handlebar controls can be added and the audio plug replicated with HD parts and the wiring diagrams from a civilian touring bike. I did this and used the Biketronics interface unit to have handlebar controls of a Sony headunit that is more capable than the HD OEM headunits in some respects.

4. The police saddlebags are hinged differently than the civilians. I mounted a King TP on a two-up detachable HD rack using spacers (3/4"-1") to lift the box to provide clearance for the saddlebag lids to open.

5. I added cruise control using the HD cruise unit and a wiring harness from Cruisemount.com.

As for resale value, nobody gets a high percentage of the out-of-pocket goodies we add to our bikes. The way I have looked at my mods is to compare what I have done with what I had to add to duplicate what was already on an EG Standard. For example, I added an HD King TP on a detachable two-up rack. That's not a duplicated expense since I would have had the exact same expense if I added a TP to a Standard. On the other hand, adding the handlebar contols and audio plug was an expense I wouldn't have had on an EG Standard. Adding cruise control required a wiring harness ($170) that would not have been required on a Standard.

But the cost of the chrome on the police model engine, tranny, etc. added to a Standard exceeds the cost of what I duplicated on my police bike, and, to my eye, the engine tranny on the Standardwithout the chrome is not very attractive. And the lower cop bike price compared to the Standard, for me at least, allowed the police model to be a less costly way to have an HD touring bike.

My bike was notused for law enforcement; it was a one-year lease to a motorcycle escort company that was the personal bike of a LEO who worked for that company. Ipurchased the HD Extended Service Plan for the peace of mind in the event of mechanical problems--something I probably would have done if I had purchased a used civiian model.

PM me if you would like more information.
