Default '99 Road King stripped oil drain plug- Help!!!

Help! The drain plug on my '99 Road King pulled a thread out of the oil pan and the plug itself isn't tightening up as it should...

Can a Helical or Timesert repair be conducted without removing the pan? The instructions speak of using a drill and my concern is, of course, clearance and accessibility.

What about oversize drain plugs? If i'm not mistaken, the stock plug is 1/2"x20...

Any input??? Thanks!!

Carl

Might try a big auto parts store for an oversize plug. You don't want to try drilling, tapping or installing an insert working underneath at an odd angle with limited clearence. You want good visibility and control for any of those tasks. Might try laying the bike on its side if you don't have a lift or otherway to gain clearence?

look at sizes here:

I'd try the rubber expanding plug as noted by mkguitar.
Easy and cheap, I've used them in the past.

the same thing happend to my old bike a 98 ultra.the expanding rubber plug would be the quickest way to fix.but if your not comfortable with that ,it can be drilled without removing the pan.as long as its the motor oil and not the tranny plug.you will have to block the bike up so you have room.make sure its solid or you will be killed when it falls.you will need a right angle drill,a 33/64" drill bit,a 1/2-20 tap and a 1/2-20x 1d helicoil and the stock drain plug.if you are not handy at things like this get the rubber plug.you can and will destroy that oil pan if your not carefull.i did my 98 and put another 40 thousand miles on her before i sold it.check to make sure the drain plug on your bike is the same size as a 98 ultra(1340cc)i believe they are the same.if it is those numbers should work. good luck. p.s. remember slightly snug w/new o-ring and not cheater bar tight on those drain plugs.i learned the hard way as have many others.

This happens and you have a few easy & inexpensive options.
A 1 time oversize plug...some have a magnet and some do not.
or
A 1 time oversize piggy back plug but the o-ring they bring sucks so substitute a 10mm sealing washer (washer with rubber seal) for the smaller plug or the o-ring squeezes out.
or
A rubber plug with the butterfly nut.

Note; any good auto part like a NAPA should be able to measure your old drain plug that you bring into the store to confirm 1/2 X 20.

I'm not to keen on the rubber plug option since I want something a little more permanent. An oversize plug sounds simple, but my concern would be how many times I could install/remove it before the remaining threads in the pan (most are still there) are compromised. It seems that the safest way to go would be an oversize, piggy-back plug. The plug itself should be 1/2"-20 based on everything I could find...
