13 FLTRU - Today while out riding, I notice my voltage was below 14 (normally its very consistent right near the 15 dot).
Pulled into a gas station to fill up.
As I pull out, its almost to 13, but as I ride, slowly climbing to about 14, then all of a sudden, the meter pegs, well above 16. When I slow down to a light, back below 14.
I noticed when it pegs, my cruise indicator light goes out, and in fact I have no cruise. When I slow down and it goes below 14, cruise indicator light comes back on.
No codes thrown.
So - is this a stator or a regulator issue? Any help appreciated.
confirm readings with a real voltmeter- use the tender pigtail, saves pulling the seat.
anything over 14.8 VDC is a bad regulator ( or any AC voltage at battery- this shows bad diode)- make sure the VR is grounded cleanly through the bolts
but that can be influenced by bad wiring, bad battery, bad stator
full methodical checks are in you manual or the tech board- electrical
stator, VR, battery any bad one can take out the other 2- and a bad cable can cause a problem to move around
with all the great advice above my bet is regulator. but nothing beats a good check. mine was the regulator. got a new one and it charged to much. got another and just right. yes, I returned the bad new one.
kroozeabout.
Ok thanks. Really would love to just replace the regulator and be done, but I guess I need to do the work. Argh
Just installing a new VR as a trouble shooting start is expensive, especially if the VR isn't the problem, but if that is what you want to do, go for it. I believe it would be difficult to get 16 volts+ from a bad stator.
