Question Electra glide electrical issues

I have a 2003 electra glide peace officers edition.
I have started experiencing some electrical issues.
The voltmeter drops to below 10 and shoots up to 14 while the speedometer drops to 0 and the odometer blinks in and out. I think it may be connected to the headlight switch but nothing seems to be loose.
I have changed the rectifier and the battery so far.
Any suggestions?

Hi Mark,

have a look at the technical forum electrical.

there you will find a tutorial on checking the charging system

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/elect...ting-alarm-43/

do not overlook the possibility of a rotted battery cable- check that both ends are clean and tight

this cable was at fault for a bunch of problems which cost my neighbor over $1300 at the dealer - as the problems continued, I found this is less than 10 minutes testing with a meter

Any codes?
Have you checked the stator voltage output?
Have you cleaned and tightened all ground connections -regulator, frame, etc?

I have looked at the cables all that I can get to and they all look good and tight.
There was a code But i couldn't tell from when it was., nor could I tell what it was. I was looking up codes and never saw it.....but now the exact code escapes me.
Additionally the idle runs high at times.
When I tested the Rectifier and the stator they tested good. Although i am not sure i tested the Stator voltage output. I was basically youtubing how to diagnose. The reason I changed the rectifier is that I read that the rectifier can give a false reading when testing with an Ohms meter.
I meant to wright that code down and didnt.

I had the same problem once with my 04. Turned out to be a bad stator, which also took out my voltage regulator.

My 02 Ultra needed a new voltage regulator with those similar issues.
Time to get the manual out along with a volt meter/multi meter and dont forget to charge up the battery before doing any of the tests.
Also maybe clean off the speed sensor too...for good measure.
No pun intended.

I rode the bike a lot today and didn't have any problems until this evening. Same symptoms. Speedometer dropping voltmeter going down and then spiking.
Since I just changed my Rectifier I hope that it doesn't get ruined by whatever it is.

I'm new to riding again and dont want to spend all my time and $$$$ in the shop or trying to diagnose myself. Although with that said I should have bought newer bike....... Darn those finances forcing decisions on me!
Thanks for the tips, I will continue to research.

Rectifier? I had a BSA with one, don't recall seeing one on a Harley. Am I missing something?

I'm sure he means the regulator. It does have a rectifier in it but does much more.

OP, you really need to do a complete electrical check. Stator, regulator, wiring, everything. It's not too unusual to get bad new parts. That's why it's important to do a reasoned, methodical test. Check the FSM or electrical section here for the procedure.

Mark,

Take a deep breath, there's a good chap! Your cables may look good and tight, but you haven't checked them, by the sound of it. So when you are offered advice, do take it. That means physically disconnecting each end of both your bike's main cables and cleaning the four terminal points, before reassembling them, preferably using dialectric grease to protect them. Mike's photo is an extreme example of decay, but yours may be going the same way. That is the first but crucial step in diagnosing and resolving your problem.
