If the windshield is too short then it's better to just go without a windshield. I went from the 4" to the 8" and now the wind goes over my head and I can easily see over the top of the windshield. The Fastaire shields are great and you still get that tinted "cool" look. The gentleman I talked to on the phone was very helpful and my sheild arrived 3 days later in perfect condition.
I have the 10" tinted and the 8" dark tint from fastaire. Love them!
I'm 6'3" and they both work well for me. I use the taller one when it's cold in the spring and fall, then for the summer I switch to the 8".
The one below is the 10". One other thing, they are priced very reasonably.
Replaced the 4 inch with the 6 inch. Seems to place the wind deflection right at the top of my helmet. I'm 6 foot and am very happy with the 6 inch shield.
I agree with the above post...going with the 4" is really worse than going with nothing. It throws the wind right in most any size rider's face. I'm not even sure it looks that cool any more. It kind of makes the bike look too squatty. At least a 6" lifts up the front end a bit, gives some protection. I've found that for the summer a Cee Bailey standard shape 7" works real well for me and preserves the lines of the SG. I also agree though that up to 10" shields still look ok on SG's....too many things about the SG to differentiate the look, for just a shorter windshield to change it. I've asked this question before though, cause I too would like to keep the windshield reasonably short while offering very good wind protection. I still see a lot of SG's around here with the stock 4"er. I really don't know if the turbulence doesn't bother them, they don't get the bike on the open road up to 80-90 or it bothers them a lot but they like the look enough to put up with it. I guess with a full face helmet it would work fine, but i don't see much of that.
..fork air baffles may help..most of turbulance appears to be coming from below by front of tank and blowing up. Hold your hand out and see where wind is coming from.

with the shorter windshield you'll definately get the wind in your face, not to mention the bugs. they're quite tastey this time of year, they go good with a corona. [8D]be sure to have some good goggles or sunglasses. n the winter time you'll appreciate the taller windshield.
