Default Cruise scare 😑

So a few weeks ago I'm going down a 4 Lane divided state hwy not far from home and I thought I'd try out my cruise control to see how it feels running with it engaged. Set it for 55 and let go of the throttle. Pretty cool!

Since I had never tried it before on this bike, next move was to make sure it disengaged and resumed as it should so I tapped my brake (can't remember at this point whether it was front or rear) and it disengaged as it should. After losing maybe 5-8 mph, I pushed the resume button and it started accelerating as it should. It hit the 55 it was set at originally and kept climbing! 60, 62, 64!!! "CRAP"! I thought! Didn't exactly panic but when tapping the brakes again did NOT disengage it, the next thing I thought was to shut off the cruise button. THAT DID NOTHING😳

Only thing I thought of at that moment was to simply shut it down and coast to the berm and let it sit for a couple minutes and restart. I did, it was fine afterward but I've not tried it since! Any ideas where I should look for the issue?

Thanks

Is it possible the switch stuck in the resume position? That's how you increase the set speed. I'd take it to a highway you know well and see if you can replicate. Push the switch down to set the next time it happens to test my theory. That's one I'd be very methodical and cautious with. Maybe disconnect the switch and test it without power?? Unfortunately, I could be one of those things that never happens again too.....

You need to troubleshoot that, but if it happens again just pull the clutch ... that should shut the cruise down.

Well, just got back from a ride and I tried again. Sure enough, when in cruise mode I step on the brake and it actually did not disengage this time. I can over ride the throttle and snap it back but even flipping the switch off does nothing. Yikes! Need a serious look into this guys 🙄

I actually tried pulling in the clutch but the motor simply revved 😑

Pull the clutch in or roll the throttle forward a bit. Either one of those actions WILL shut it off.

I think something like this I would bite the bullet and take it to someone who really knows what they are doing, even the HD dealer. Not worth taking a chance with it.

This story would be more interesting if we knew the year. Cable or wire?

I use my cruise alot. Never had a problem. Never accelerates like that and never fails to cut out.

I do question, that this was the first time you used it, and you had problems. How long have you had the bike?

If the throttle was actually stuck, it will start to scream and rev high. Though would give yo a 2nd to gather your thoughts. Problem being when you let go of clutch you are at XXX RPMs

If the throttle is really stuck wide open, I would pull the clutch in , kill the motor and coast. I may let it acceralate for a bit looking for a better place to pull over. Though I think 65 scares some guys on Harleys,
