Default Burnt clutch cable

Had some work done by a local shop recently and long story short it’s the last time they will touch my Road King. Oil leaks I’ve never had before, bolts not tightened to torque specs, rear master cylinder rubber boot not seated correctly, etc etc to include them running my clutch cable incorrectly allowing it to rest right up against my exhaust.

Glad I found this now or that could have been bad. The rubber coating is a melted mess along about a 4” section of my clutch cable. From what I can tell the rubber is the only damaged part so far. I can just barely see the steel braided wire that houses the clutch cable and on one tiny spot about a quarter of an inch the rubber outer cable is completely gone. I had a friend operate the clutch and from what I can see the steel braided cable is still fully intact along this damaged area as I cannot see the movement of the cable inside it.

I am aware the best option is to replace the cable but money time etc etc I’m wondering if it’s ok if I just wrap it up with some type of tape and wait til winter. I rerouted the cable underneath the timing cover and to the inside of the rear master cylinder so it’s away from the exhaust now.

Is this salvageable for the summer and if so what tape on the market would be best?

I believe the outer plastic is simply a moisture seal for the steal sheath. If it were mine I'd coat the damaged section in black plasti dip and not worry further about it.

Depending on where this happened on the cable it could leak oil. The oil from the transmission migrates down into the cable from the clutch cover.

its a slimy mess down there. Down there being right next to/slightly foward of where the floorboard is. Tranny oil is redline and nothing underneath shows signs of red oil.

That is more than likely trans oil. It probably isn't very red due to the graphite lube in the cable and some road grime mixed in. I know from experience being a dumbshit myself when I put apes on an Ex-GF's bike and didn't insulate the cable against heat.

i didn’t go into detail but I’ve been dealing with leaks other than there due to the shops negligence so there’s no telling what it’s from exactly.
i know I should really just replace the cable but ugggh lol

Just get you some diesel in a rattle can. ..Gunk Original or Foamy, your choice...and get on it. Get that puppy clean, suss out the leaks, and if the cable is innocent, do what ya gotta and motor on til winter.

I'd clean it off with some spray brake cleaner, no residue after dries. The idea about plasti-dip sounds pretty good. Let cure real good. Maybe a few drops of lube in the cable afterward, maybe in a week.

I’m going to use liquid electrical tape instead of plasti dip. The cable is still attached with limited free play so it will be much easier to apply the liquid tape with the included brush verses trying to spray it on.
