So today I noticed when passing a car on the freeway at about 80mph that the 6 in my gear cluster had disappeared. Once I let off the throttle the 6 came back on. I could replicate this pretty much at will, get to about 70 roll on the throttle till about 80, the 6 disappears. Again let off the throttle and it would come back on. And once while in 6th trying to replicate it again the 6 goes out at 80 and the 5 lights up. Any one have any idea whats going on? Bike seems to run just fine, but would like tI figure out whats the problem. Thanks in advance. Rob
Sounds like the clutch is slipping.
Watch the tach when this happens. If it goes up it's the clutch.
Your gear indicator works by reading speed and rpm to decide what gear you're in.
So I took the bike out today. I cant get the clutch to slip even under hard acceleration. So its hard for me to believe that its slipping in 6th gear with moderate throttle. does any one know where the readings for speed and RPM are taken from? like is there a sensor that could be cleaned? thanks Rob.

The speed sensor is on top of the trans case near the starter.
The "6" is not a direct link to the 6th gear kinda thing. It's an algorithm based on engine vs trans speed computed by the ECM. So... if your clutch is slipping the computation can be off and the "6" will go off.
That said, clean or replace the speed sensor. They have known to go bad and do iffy things.
If you have changed any gearing or put a power Vision or TTS or any Tuner beside the SE tuners you may need to reset the Speedometer Calculation or the gearing numbers. If the cruise doesn't set when the 6th light is out is likely the same issue. You can check the speedometer to a GPS and if off over 4 mph needs to be adjusted. I don't think cruise will set above 90 MPH anyway.
