yea that doesnt look right..........replace those plastic hoses while youre in there
The line from the pump to the housing is part of the fuel pump assembly. I don't see that it's sold separately. Not interested in replacing the whole assembly.
The other is attached to the fuel tank outlet disconnect. Can it be replaced without pulling the tank outlet quick disconnect?
The third is the suction hose to the right side of the tank. It looks good.
I'm not against replacing hoses but they look to be in overall excellent condition. I got another buddy coming over this morning to put a second set of eyes on everything, but that bent flange is all I see.
ok.......inspect the fuel filter plastic housing with a magnifying glass..........that tends to crack........look over those hoses real good........the high pressure hose to the tank disconnect I believe CAN be replaced but WILL have to be removed to attach the new hose (comes with new clamps).....if its ok, let it be......
I say fix what ya can see that bad and put it back.........
When I changed my filter on my 07 the housing had a small crack on the top spigot. Changed it and all the hoses. Actually I went to Napa and bought a 10' ft roll so I have enough to do it twice more. The factory hoses are garbage. Make sure you get fuel injection hose that is submersible! I put a piece of the old hose around the new pickup hose where it rubs on the tank to prevent it wearing through
Got a new top cap assembly, fuel filter housing, fuel filter, and a new hose from the filter housing to the tank quick disconnect. Everything is SOLID now, no wobbling.
The new hose did NOT have the filter side quick connect on it so we took the old one off the old hose and there was NO WAY IN HELL it was going in the new hose. Harley must have a special tool to install those. Off to the parts store for submersible fuel line and some clamps... Probably better than Harley's piece anyway, but waste of 55 bucks except got a new tank side quick disconnect.
Put everything together, hit the switch to prime and STILL getting a very slight mist... its WAY better than before. The only thing we can think is somewhere(and we've inspected it as well as we can) on the line from the pump to the filter is a pin hole or something. So thinking we are going to order some 5/16(its smaller than the 3/8) submersible and replace that as well since the pump itself seems to be running well so we would rather not replace it.
The other thought is the very fine mist we are seeing is the fuel pressure regulator working. Does it spray fuel out of the small metering hole in it when its relieving pressure? Because from what we can the location of the mist is near the filter housing.
My Ultra is at my buddies house to make room in my garage to work on this bike. We are going to start it with the fuel cap off and look down inside it, BUT mine is an 18 and this is an 08 so I am GUESSING its totally different fuel systems.
the 18's aren't on this site yet.......but this gives a breakdown of parts........type in year and then model.....and I imagine the 18's are quite different. http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche....LIDE%C2%AE-(FC)
cant hurt to try........and other thing previously mentioned..........turn on ignition and hit start button right away.........dont wait........that seems to be the best thing for hot start problems.
Put everything back together, rode it about 15 miles and went to my buddies house. Shut it off in his driveway and immediately started it back up(waited for it to prime), boom fired up. Did it 3 more times. Let it set 5 minutes to heat soak. Boom fired up 3 times. Let it set again. Fired up 3 times.
Im not calling it fixed until my buddy rides it a few days with no issues, but it appears that VERY small bend in the filter housing was causing fuel pressure loss. The new assembly all fit VERY tight together so I know there is no pressure loss in it now.
As far as the fine mist, all I can think is its the FPR releasing a tiny bit of fuel to control fuel pressure. My bike does it as well and its brand new so I know it has no issues. This fine mist is definitely NOT what it was doing before as it was spraying lots of fuel.
SO I will try to report back in a week or so if everything is good.
HUGE thanks to everybody that posted and gave me advice on where to look and what to do for trouble shooting. Saved my buddy a ton of money I am sure.
Just wanted to update since I see a lot of threads with no update.
The bike has seen probably 1500+ miles since i swapped all the parts.
zero issues to report.
When I test rode it I noticed it had perceptible increased power. My buddy said he feels the same way like it has more power now. Im guessing it was running lean before due to fuel pressure being down.
Thanks again to all that provided technical knowledge and advice.
