Default Fluid Change Question

Greetings,

I am going to do my first fluid change on my 07 Ultra. My question may seem obvious, but I have always had someone dealers service my bike in the past, but am going to change the fluids myself because the dealer is against non-harley fluids.

Besides the 0-rings, what other items should I just switch out to reduce risk of leaks? Gaskets? I have a service manual, and am confident that I can do the work, but would like suggestions on preventive ideas.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

That's just rude. Why bother posting at all here?

You need the obvious things like the fluids and filter and the 07 use the same "O" rings on all the plugs. Lube the orings a bit so they don't tear on installation and don't overtorque them either. Cleanup is fun after a change. Try to catch as much oil as you can when you loosen the filter and not get oil on the front mount if you can avoid it. The derby cover gasket is reusable so you are good there.

Good luck.

if you choose to replace the Derby cover with a logo cover, you will need a new, fiber gasket (different style), Don't forget the clutch cable adjustment, mine was way out at 900 miles, and also the toorque on the wheels, and other misc bolts.

I wouldn't change other gaskets till you have to. My rockers are still dry after 2,000 miles, but my son's sportster leaked out after only 1,600 miles. When they do leak (only paper), use James gaskets. While your in there, roller rockers would be nice, and might as well do the cams, since the rockers are off. Also, You are only 4 bolts away from the heads coming off, good port and polish would be nice. At that point, why not pull the jugs, and cans...

God, I love this stuff...

Thanks. I am going to start by just doing fluids (engine, primary, transmission), and let the dealer to the rest of the normal 1k svc.

As I get more confidence I will move into other areas.

Thanks for the info, and if you are ever in Colorado, look me up would love to show you some of the nice canyon rides around here.
