Default 01 Ultra - Leak Behind Inner Primary

Hey guys, I have been noticing a spot about the size of a quarter under the drain plug on the primary whenever I park my bike in the garage. I have had the primary outer off a few times for maintenance/repairs twice this summer and resealed the drain plug. After cleaning the bottom of the primary where the drain plug is I have now found that the leak is coming from behind the inner and running down and dripping off the lowest point which is the primary drain plug. I am going to be pulling the inner off this winter and was hoping someone here could give me a list of any seal/gaskets or any other items that should be changed/checked when the inner is off. Since I can't see back there I want to try and order anything that could be leaking back there. Any help would be appreciated!

Based on the description you've given, I'd be willing to bet $1 that it's your shifter shaft seal. I wouldn't state that as a definite, but I'd bet on it.

It's an easy and inexpensive fix, but a PITA to get to if that's indeed where your leak is coming from. And you'll know if it is once you get the inner primary off. It'll be obvious.

Is it trans fluid or primary fluid leaking? If its primary juice- then its probably the mainshaft seal in the inner primary. Easy to change (once you get the inner primary off. Might as well change the primary bearing while there. Also the starter jackshaft seal. Change em all. Buy a kit from drag specialties or all *****.

I can see the shift shaft seal and it looks like it is seeping but not anything more than seepage. I was intending on changing that while back there. I was a transmission rebuilder for over 20 years so changing the shift shaft seal is in my wheel house.

I believe it is primary fluid but want to change anything that is accessible back there. Just was hoping for a list of things so I can order them and have them when I start tearing into it.

Yep- just get an inner primary rebuild kit from drag spec. Or all *****- comes with all seals and a nice new bearing. Up here in canada- about 60 bucks.

Inner primary bearing and seal. Mine did it earlier this year. I thought it might be the primary gasket since I've reused several times. But once I got the bike raised and got a good look, it was the seal.
Now, I didn't replace the bearing sleeve, just the bearing. The original race sleeve looked great after I polished it with scotchbright.

Ed, are you saying the inner bearing inner race walked into the main drive gear seal possibly? I think I remember seeing somewhere that the inner race has an o-ring under it and has to be pressed on the shaft. Is this accurate?

Sorry - should have been a little more clear. If the race is walking, it will start as a primary leak as the race walks away from the inner primary seal. If you do not repair it, it will walk into the MDG seal. I was a little rushed in my previous reply. From your description, I believe your primary is most likely leaking at this time and the race is walking in toward the MDG seal.

But - there are also other areas that can be leaking from the back of the inner primary - like where the primary chain shoe tensioner mounting bolts attach - they are sealed with silicone on the back of the inner primary. The amount you describe is indicative of the race walking. investigate it sooner than later.

But still - if you dye either primary or trans, you will know what is/isn't leaking.
