That's why I loan / front nothing , hopefully the deposit was the full replacement price , rarely have I ever loaned any thing and not had to go reclaim it

Keep on doing what you're doing; you'll be fine.
If he doesn't come through, you're well within your right to call the transaction a sale any time now. The longer you wait is only grace that you're showing to him. Kudos.

You're a good guy to do something like this and hopefully you don't get burned. I never understood the mentality "I never loan my tools or anything out". They are tools.....not your wife. To me that is what is wrong with people nowadays. The 'don't trust anyone' mentality is a lonely sad way to live. Heck, I have 2 bikes and when a buddy who knows how to ride wants to borrow one....HAVE AT IT!! That's what insurance is for, but more importantly, what friends and being a good human is about!! Cheers to you for being a good guy!!

Nothing wrong with loaning tools as long as your expectations include the possibility of not getting them back. As I was told in my youth, never loan anything you cannot afford to lose. If you want to loan on a deposit, and want the tool, then set the deposit at least high enough to replace it. I can understand the aggravation of someone breaking an agreement but that's what the deposit was for. I'd chalk it up experience and try not to let it color my attitude too much.

It was very generous of you to loan the tools, not so cool for the individual to fail in returning them.

Maybe I need to start making my neighbor leave a deposit, because I am forever having to walk over and re-claim my stuff

good on you for loaning your tools!! I used to do the same for years but got burned too many times so I no longer do it!! I used to loan out my car hauler trailer from time to time but got tired of having to get it back myself when I needed it but all too often I would have to repair it first !! torn off electrical plug in for lights or broken tail lights or bent fenders the list goes on!! finally sold that one and bought a new one and now no one uses it but me !!

Ignore all the cynics!
your a stand up guy Steve and your generosity would be appreciated and reciprocated by most...I would hope.
doing the right thing even if you get burned is still the right thing.
id have returned them better then I’d received them.

That's horrible. My rule of thumb is that when I return something it is in better shape than when I got it. If I mess it up.....I replace it or get it fixed. It's not only common sense but just being an adult!!
