I try to never borrow anything. My next door neighbor borrowed some of those long handled pruning shears. I call them lock n shears. She never returned them. A week later, I saw them in her rash can snapped in half. They were heavy duty. No idea what the hell she was trying to cut. Had another buddy that was a carpenter. He knew I had every tool known to man, if not two of them. He figured I was a tool rental store where you didn't have to pay rental. Dude wanted to borrow everything I owned so he could keep jobs going. Not a chance.
Jeez, you just reminded me of the two Harley Davidson service manuals I loaned to a neighbor about 5 or 6 years ago. I don't think he even has a bike anymore. I know I don't have my service manuals. Lesson learned for me with that individual.
In what ways did your trust diminish? You made him pay a deposit plus the shipping cost before you sent them, right? Sounds like you didn't trust him to begin with. I think what you did was wise, and nice. Just don't see what the problem is. Maybe something happened to the guy...
A friend loaned me his car, a cool mustang (he also had a Jeep) for a week when mine needed repairs.
Ive always remembered that, and ir was over 40 years ago.
We live in different states across the country now, but I’ll never forget his generosity.
I've always made it a point to return things in better shape than when i borrowed them. And return them quickly when done. Some people just don't get it.
If the deposit was sufficient to make you whole again then the only problem I see here is the guy not being straight up about keeping the tools. The holiday thing is an obvious lie, probably to cover up that he hadn't actually done the job yet. Probably still hasn't done it.
Anyway, hope you set the deposit high enough you come out ok. And ignore all the criticism.
You're a good guy to do something like this and hopefully you don't get burned. I never understood the mentality "I never loan my tools or anything out". They are tools.....not your wife. To me that is what is wrong with people nowadays. They don't trust anyone' mentality is a lonely sad way to live. Heck, I have 2 bikes and when a buddy who knows how to ride wants to borrow one....HAVE AT IT!! That's what insurance is for, but more importantly, what friends and being a good human is about!! Cheers to you for being a good guy!!
Hmmm, I personally think that's backwards thinking....
What's wrong with people nowadays is the way some treat other people, who do them a favor... There are a lot of entitled, self-absorbed people who are the center of their universe and act like the rest of us are just here to make their journey more pleasant...
Having dealt with more than a few of these people has certainly given me pause.... I'm not nearly as quick to offer my time, service, tools, to just anyone anymore....

See , and it hasnt affected your outlook at all.
why do them a favor? cause 98% appreciate it and it feels right to help someone out if you have the means...
I'm a firm believer that, if I can help someone out, my labor is free within reason. I'm not going to give up so much of my free time that it causes me stress at home.
My tools, I have spent a lot of time earning the money to pay for those. Those do not get loaned out to just anyone. less than a handful can borrow tools. Using them while I am there helping you, fine, but they don't leave my place. Those few that are allowed to borrow, they know, it comes back in the same condition than when it left (a broken socket with a lifetime warranty or something like that is the exception), and in a reasonable amount of time. I shouldn't have to and will not more than once chase after my own tools.
