I feel the pain. Every time I have loaned tools something disappeared or got broken with no recompense.

I now refuse. My tools dont leave my garage without my supervision. If I have time I'll come help you but you ain't getting my tools.

You are fair to complain and pretty honest for not name shaming them. I say send them a receipt and cash out. Lesson learned

i've always believed that if you borrow something, you return it in better shape than you got it (if possible). and if you break it, scratch it, whatever, you replace the damn thing. i don't understand why that is such a difficult concept for others to understand.

That’s the exact tool I need! Can I get their name? Maybe he feels remorse and will loan it out....

I always got good advice on this forum, purchased items on here at good prices and enjoyed the drama at times.....I wanted to give back but like I stated, I did cover myself by asking for a deposit.

I have no problem taking the deposit money for the tools but the loanee made it clear he wanted his money back and would return the tools.

I'm hoping he sees this post and does the right thing, one way or the other......
When I had to upgrade my cam chest way back, I had a guy on here make me the offer to do exactly what you did. I was, and still am, extremely grateful. He was in Portland and I live outside Vancouver, BC Canada, although I have a US shipping address. I was quite thrilled with the trust he put in me, because he didn't even ask for a deposit, just pay the shipping both ways. Guess what. He was a lawyer. I don't think you should let one bad person change your wonderful attitude.

I used to know a guy that would buy vehicles that needed some work on them for cheap, fix them, then put them in His front yard for sale (Busy highway there). At income tax return time, it was important to Him to have a "Fleet" of low cost autos for sale when people would have that tax return money "Burning a hole in their pocket". The prices were quite low, so He would take a down payment, and "Hold the note" along with the title until it was paid off. CASH payments were expected in a timely manner, and in CASH. No BS allowed.
You would not believe the stories.
If they gave Him the dodge, He would find them and talk to them ONCE. He left with either cash or vehicle.
If there was a next time, He would bring "Bruno" with Him. Bruno was BAD NEWS. Bruno expected CASH. No cash? Bruno had a lightening fast technique where He could badly break a thumb in a second.(Seriously!) That service was available for $50.00, and was included when He got the call for "Come over, I need to go pull one". Following the thumb deal, the vehicle was loaded on the "Roll Back", taken back to the yard, and was up for sale again.
The word got out, lots of vehicles were sold, and Bruno was needed less and less. Bruno was a bouncer at a topless bar full time, so this was just "Pocket Change" for Him.
You know, in your general dealings with people, if you are fair and on the level with people, that is a good thing. However, there are people out there that will indeed try to find ways to screw you over, and when they do - it will not bother them in the least. In fact, some will think they came out really good in the deal. We must remain vigilant and protect ourselves and our possessions. We have to be careful with who we trust, even more so if we know nearly nothing about them.
Kudos to the OP for getting the deposit. Good move.
One of the many things in life often overlooked is "Teachable Moments".

Seriously?????? You must be the guy that borrowed them.
