A voltmeter at the battery is your best test. And while you're in there clean the terminals and check the grd cables to make sure they have a good clean grounding surface and are tight.
The electric diag. manual says anything over 15 V can cause damage. Like the others have said, Once you know the battery and grounds are clean and tight you could use the + lug on the battery or Battery tender plug if you have one to check voltage. Our bikes run right at 14V when running down the road and the gauge has fortunately been spot on.
the gauges are usually very close... i would dbl check with meter at batt or on tender pigtail but if me... i would go ahead and replace VR anyway...they can be spotty for sure... mine acted up for almost a year before i fired up bike one morning and volts were at 10... tapped VR with hammer and they jumped to 14... they can regulate low or high when failing.. most of time high tho
Follow up and thanks for all the replies - I don't think my digital multi- meter is the most accurate, but checked at the battery this weekend and it is right at 14.3 - 14.5 at 2500 rpm so I think I'm good. The gauge is not as bad as I thought either - just really hard to read with a helmet and bi-focals
