'Over the Pond' UK side if a motorcycle is worth over Ł20k it is an insurance prerequisite that the vehicle has a tracker fitted in many cases. My local Harley dealer supplies and fits trackers free of charge. It is the subscription that costs, for me it was a one off payment of Ł450 for the term of ownership of the bike or an annual subscription that was about Ł200. Bike theft is very prolific in the UK unfortunately and having one fitted does make you sleep a little easier at night. There is a service provider that will send you a text and e-mail immediately your bike is moved a metre or so and they will call your designated phone number, the unit has three means of communication and is regarded more as a discreet anti theft tool as well as a recovery means should the bike actually be taken away.
The age old question about 'whether you want it back after it is stolen' will rumble on and on but considering the notifications you receive chances are you can prevent it going AWOL in the first place. Thieves are cowards most will scarper pdq as soon as they know someone is on to them.
Hey randy - I was interested in this myself so I typed ( app for phone if motorcycle was stolen in canada ) - Google - and quite a few popped up -canadamotoguide.com was one of the many - I dont have any personal experience but this may help !
If you have the technical skills and abilities to obtain an Amateur Radio license then there is a free method to track your bike/vehicle. It’s called APRS or Automatic Packet Reporting System, a system that takes GPS positions of your vehicle and transmits that data through a worldwide network of amateur radio repeaters and nodes so that you can pull up or map your location from any computer, radio or cellphone.
First and foremost, this is not a commercial system. It is for amateur radio operators hobbyists and primarily used to track/locate other amateur radio operators and experimental weather balloons, rockets, etc. You have to have technical skills and the ability to understand how APRS operates. With that, and an amateur radio license you can computer track your bike pretty much anywhere and everywhere with very small exceptions.
Here’s an explanation link to the APRS system and another of the many types of tracking beacons available.
I don't think I'd want to even see it, let alone get it back. I've seen way too many trashed vehicles that were theft recoveries sittting in the County Sheriffs Evidence storage area.
, And most likely it would be stripped of anything which could be easily sold, too.
I'm looking into them too right now, and not because I'd want it back if stolen but because it is supposed to reduce the cost of insurance if one is installed. They tell me a big chunk of the policy cost is related to the CC's so these M8's are costing more to insure. I'm just waiting on them to let me know what the savings are exactly and if it offsets the cost of the unit & subscription.
It's a 03 RKC. I dont see them being stolen very much but if peace of mind is what your looking for then you should check out the side by side world. they have a small GPS tracking system most riders hide on their rigs. I dont knownthe name but the ones I've heard guys at work talk about have a lifetime warranty and can be taken out of the black box even to make it even more hide able. I used to worry about my 14 sg. then I figured like everybody else if it gets taken that what insurance is for. Guy at work bike was stolen took over a year to get it settled with the insurance company. bike was never found, he had all his receipts and they still fought him over the final payout. Even had accessory coverage. Being in the south of you doesnt always make it better.
....and IF you do track it and come upon it and the thief or thiefs who have it.....what are you going to do??.....Guns?, knifes?, respectful conversations?......It's just not worth it! No amount of money can replace the worst that can happen.....metal can always be replaced, even if it costs some out of pocket money.
Why not have it appraised and increase your insurance for "full replacement value"?
Bring them your FOB and signed title, obviously. Watch them mount and ride your bike around. Harley cuckolding.
