Default newbie's first poker run

I am new at poker runs and was wondering if anyone had tips or tricks of the trade to make this enjoyable. We are planning on staying overnight after the run so a overnight bag will be a must. Thanks in advance and ride safe. HAGO! Remi

dont drink to much early on in the run!

stay away from the groups of sloppy , speed demons when the testosterone driven saps start reving late in the run.

most important - ENJOY , have a GREAT TIME and ride safe. after its over - (especially if your staying over) drink whatever you like with no worry.

everyone usually starts off calm and considerate at the start. as the run starts to unfold some drink to much to early and become a hazard to the group.

SO I HAVE HEARD

Remi .. the secret is do draw a good poker hand to make your first run more enjoyable.

However, even without a winning poker hand just enjoy the ride, meet new friends and most of all be safe and have fun!!

I didn't know they would have "drinks" on the run. We are doing what they call the 5 in 1 here in Colorado Springs, CO. Five mountain passes all over 10,000 feet each in one day. It would seem crazy and stupid if they offered "drinks" at each pass. But then again I have never done this so if they do I will take your advices. Any tips on equipment or what to bring (which I know will very from person to person)? This is our second major ride together and I want the wife and I to be prepared and have fun at the same time. Thanks again and any other advice will be appreciated. HAGO! Remi

its not necessarily that 'they' offer drinks, but that usually the stops are at or near bars so some of the riders help themselves. for our poker runs here in la, the runs go through the la and texas countryside so its not usually bars that are the problem, but our stops are at convenience stores so people usually go in and get a beer or two there. we've not had a problem with people drinking too much on the runs, they usually wait until its over then pull out all the stops. but if you find you are near or in a group with someone drinking more than you are comfortable with, then you can wait until the next group or go out on your own. remember, on a poker run, it is not a timed event so long as you are back by a certain pre-set end time, which is usually set very conservatively.

have fun, poker runs can be a lot of fun.

See you there. These folks have a decent history of well organized runs.

There are at least 4 guided groups for this years ride. I would plan to get out ahead of those people if you can. It means an early start but you don't want to be stuck at the end of a large group of riders running side by side.

I would venture a guess that 99.9% of us are used to a different kind of poker run, where the stops are bars and you don't spend the night or need "equipment". You might want to talk to someone who's done that particular run because us flatlanders won't be much help I'm afraid.

Thanks for the info. Ozy that is good to know about the groups. I havn't been riding for very long and was going to be at the back of the pack anyway, but if I can go out on my own with a couple of friends that I know will be there, that is cool also. I hope the weather holds out (I just made a funny). HAGO, Remi

Ride at your pace, not everyone elses. SAFTY FIRST. Dress for the crash, not the weather, sounds stupid, i know, but I would rather have something and not need it, that need something and not have it.
maybe pack some water and some warmer clothes ( sweater, sweat jacket, ect. ), thost mountians get cool in spots. at least they do here on the right coast. Most of all, have fun and meet some of your brothers.

Zimbob, thanks for the info. I was a little concerned with the concept of riding in a pack (middle would be the worst) but I just found out that they have changed the run to include me and my buddies can ride on our own. So it will be cool to ride with 3 other bikes vs. 15 or 20 bikes in a pack. HAGO! Remi
