Default Surging Cruise Cotrol

Hey ya'll, haven't been on much lately.

The cc on my 2000 Ultra has been surging and then shutting down. I'll be riding along just fine with cc engaged and after a while, the bike will speed up a bit on its own, then back off and repeat. It'll do this a few times then the cc shuts down. Usually when this happens it won't re-engage, but the next time I ride it's likely to engage again and work fine for a while, then act up again. I disconnected the throttle cable switch some time ago. Thought I'd check here for "oh yeah, that happened to me and here's what I did" answers before I start diagnostics.

Are both accelerator cables adjusted to specs?

I suggest setting throttle cables to spec first. Check the cruise control cable where it attaches to the throttle body....they usually fray there. Make sure the two connections are secured on the cable(where it runs under the fuel tank). These connections are easily damaged and sometimes become disconnected.

If all good...you need to reset the backlash for the cruise control stepper motor. It’s a relatively easy process..

My opinion....it sounds like the cruise control cable from stepper motor to throttle body is binding/sticking....possibly stretched and now frayed.

Your bike is old enough to vote. Has any of the involved mechanism ever been cleaned and lubed? It may be nothing more than the cable or some other moving part being "gunked up" from 19 years of dirt accumulation. Is your speedo driven by a cable from the front wheel or from an electronic sensor in the transmission? If it is electronic, does your radio volume change with speed changes, do the turn signals cancel normally? Cruise problems combined with either or both of the other problems suggest contamination on the transmission sensor. Removing it and wiping it clean usually restores normal function, at least for a while. Nothing wrong with any of the above suggestions, just go for the easy stuff first.

Close enough, but I have disconnected the switch that is built into the throttle cables so I don't think this would matter since the cruise control adjusts the throttle with its own cable.

Thanks for the tips - I will look at each of these.

Speedo is electronically controlled and the sending unit in the transmission has been in place for about a year, through which time the cc worked fine until recently. Everything sensor related is working fine (volume, turn signal cancellation). Thanks for the suggestion.

Anytime I’ve done anything to my cruise control....I’ve always had to go through this procedure. Granted everything else is connected properly and set right.

Update: I installed a ThunderMax ECM a few weeks ago and my cruise control has, so far, been working flawlessly.
