Default Wheel spacer moves freely

I just had a local indy shop put new tires on a set of wheels I bought. The wheels are stock wheels just newer and cleaner than the current ones on my 11 electra ultra classic. I had them put in new bearings and spacers(sleeves?). I did not notice until I got them home but the spacer moves around between the bearings. On the front wheel the spacer will rattle back and forth freely. On the rear wheel it is slightly tighter but I can still move it with my fingers easily.

Is this normal???

I take it you have abs ??
As your Indy did the bearings install, we will be double guessing what he has done ..
First off, the inner spacer/sleeve should not be rattling around between the bearings... If bearings were installed correctly,, the inner spacer should be firm touching both bearings, but with your fingers through bearings the inner spacer should be able to move slightly side to side, (ie , the axle should be able to slide through without having to bash it through)….

A new inner spacer was installed,,, Is it the correct spacer ?? They come in different sizes..... We will carry on and say it was.....
Was the abs bearing installed on the primary side first , and seated ?? … If yes, where going good …
Spacer/ Sleeve is then installed down hub..
Non abs bearing , (numbers facing out), is then installed / pressed in far enough that spacer / sleeve finishes up as per above description ….

No doubt the non abs bearing needs to pressed further in to firm up the inner spacer in the correct position ….

if that is the part mentioned by the op I can’t imagine how he is touching it on an assembled bike.

Is he referring to part number 10?

I am referring to the part pictured. The wheels are a second set and not currently on the bike. The rear wheel doesn't rattle freely but the front wheel does move on its own. Yes I have abs. As far as what order they installed the parts I do not know. Nor do I know if they are seated properly don't have much experience with wheel things.

They either have the wrong spacer in there or they don't have the bearings seated deep enough in the wheel. I had a dealer do the same thing and when i pointed it out he tried to tell me that's the way these new sealed bearings are to be installed. This was a warrenty replacement of the bearings and tire.
I said bulls--t ! That bearing should be installed to where there is no play between it's inner race and that spacer. There is a certain way they are be installed, Get the service manual and the right tool to do this job and don't trust these nitwits to take YOUR life into their hands.

I do not see these second spacers you're referring to on the parts diagram for my bike. I know the indy went up the road to the dealer for the bearings so I'd assume he got the sleeves there as well. I also assume he would have had to tell them the model and year of the bike... I am doing a lot of assuming though...

One more thing , if they have to remove one of these bearing for any reason, it's shot and a new one should be installed in it's place. Once it's taken out it's ruined.
