So I've been reading on the forum here for years about how mileage tanks on any bike with a fairing over say 70 mph. Well the freeways have been totally clear in Phoenix & cruising at 80-85 mph I've been getting the best gas mileage I've ever seen. 34 mpg, I'm normally closer to 29-31 mpg in traffic. Does anybody have an explanation for this?? & I know everyone will be telling me that they get 45-50 mpg, well I sure dont get anything close to that. PO had her tuned rich & she runs great & not hot at all. 103 ci, 09 ultra classic, SE Slip ons, kuryakyn bahn AC, SE Super Tuner Pro
Considered yourself blessed that you can engage in this scientific study. Here the traffic hasn't slowed one iota.In fact it's increased as dingbats scurry from store to store in search of the elusive roll of toilet paper.
I use an app called Simply Auto and record every gallon of fuel used. I reset odometer to zero, and track my mpg.... I do know that I get far less driving around town and local than when I go on trips. The constant start, stops, and speed variations around town do affect fuel mileage. No idea why you get that low other than it's running a bit rich. I average low 40's around town and mid to upper 40's (and occasionally 50's+) on trips. If you run this app for couple months, you should get a good idea of your fuel usage.

I am willing to bet if you did that same ride at on the freeways at 70, you would be getting close to 40mpg

I have a stock 2015 Ultra Classic. I get about 32-35mpg riding around the area I live, so that includes some Interstate and city roads, but mostly city. If I took a trip to Jacksonville, FL from Charleston, SC, I would get in the low to mid 40s. I have NEVER hit 50 mpg on ANY motorcycle I've owned.
May depend on any wind you had during that ride. Heading into a strong headwind, at speed, really knocks my fuel consumption, whereas with a good following wind she just Glides along!
If you want fuel mileage buy a livewire or a moped . You won't get any better mileage without a faring. Tugging the sidecar loaded and staying with highway traffic speeds 35 MPG. With sidecar off 42 MPG. Getting silly rinding like it was stolen 35 mpg or less.
