Default Drive belt adjustment?

I've got the slightest hint of a squeal on acceleration/deceleration and am wondering if I need to adjust the drive belt. Problem is that the manual says to test cold. Ok, no prob. But somebody tell me just exactly how much is 10# of pressure? I know, there's a special tool for it. But frankly, I'm sick of having to buy a special tool for everything Harley has![:@]

The harley gauge is only 20-25 bucks, I used a fishing scale with a rigged up wire gizmo to adjust mine prior to getting the harley gauge and it was close but I prefer the proper tool for the job.My belt squeaked some and I cleaned it and therear pulleyand it now does not make a peep.

Never heard of cleaning one before. What did you clean it with?

To clean the belt use a mild detergent and brush.I have seen no need to clean mine,11K miles.
$25 for a tension gage is not bad,at least you will have the right tool and wont have to guess.

Yeah, just the principle, I guess. Hey, I've got a torque wrench, reckon I could rig something up with it?

I used soap and water with a brush to clean it up,on a lift with wheels off the ground and the saddlebags and pipes removed, previous owner had gotten armor all or something on it I think as everything was coated with shiny crap.No noise now in over 7500 miles.

Geez, I would think Armor All would make it squeek till I went crazy. Just don't try to clean the belt with the bike up on the stand and running in gear. Had to say it cause I know someone would or probably has tried it.

All drive belts on the toothed side get a shiny polished look.
That is called "burnishing" it's normal, leave it alone.
The squeak is usually from wrong belt tension.
Readjust it a go ride.
