First off, the bike has been a bit difficult to start lately. Push the starter button and it takes a few seconds for the bike to start. Just seemed to be really dragging to get the pistons up to speed to start the bike. Last night I drive it into work and all seems fine except the slow start before leaving. Get off of work and go to start the bike and the power comes on, but once I hit the starter button, the power cuts out. After a couple seconds, power comes back on but when I push the starter button, I get a clicking sound. Try this a couple more times and the bike switches from the clicking sound to the total loss of power. Eventually, I lost power completely and the bike was dead. Buddy at work gives me a jump and the bike fires up immediately. Not even a hestitation. Fires up like it should without the dragging. I ride the bike home the hour it takes and get to the dealer I purchased from and he lets me know it will be about a week before he can even look at it. I tell him I will take the bike home and keep it on the trickle charger and still use it daily until he can get to it. Go outside and the bike is dead. Any ideas? Strator? Voltage regulator? Battery? Just doesn't seem to be charging the battery. Seems like I have been riding on the battery alone without it ever recharging while riding.
Ya've either got loose connections or a battery fixin' ta go on ya.Disconnect the batteryconnections, charge well, test (and note) voltage. Leave disconnected fer 24 hours, retest voltage. If it's more than 0.2 volts lower, replace the battery.
All is well again. The shop actually fixed it this afternoon and the bike is back home. Turns out it was the voltage regulator. Apparently mine was one of the recall units. Looks like it died a slow death and finally kicked today. They replaced it and charged the battery and it starts up immediately now. No more dragging or struggling to start. Props to the Michigan City HD shop as he was swamped when I went in there this afternoon and I was told it would be a week before they even got to look at it.
Check to make sure your battery cables are tight, and make sure the ground cable is also tight. Also, make sure there is no rust or corrosion on them too while you are at it.
Samething happened to me, spent 30 minutes checking every fuse and stuff like that. Ended up being the battery connections.
