Default 2010 UC 96" oil cooler question

Howdy all,

I have a 2010 Ultra Classic with a stock 96" motor. A while back I put a quieter exhaust system on it (still cat free though) and noticed engine temp went up a little on the rare occasions I am in stop and go traffic.

Since the bike didn't come with an oil cooler stock I am looking into buying one and installing it. I sort of like the idea of the ones with fans that cut on when it gets hot enough. I have looked at the Ultra Cool and Jagg units. Do any of y'all have any preferences between these two units? Are there others that y'all may like better?

One thing I didn't like too much about the Jagg was they want you to run the 12v wire for the fan to the CAN BUS diagnostic connector. I leave my FP3 plugged into that all the time so I don't like that idea. That being said I don't know if my pre-Rushmore bike is what they consider to be "can bus" or not. The diagnostic connector looked like the newer four pin model, not the six pin connector I have. If I could run the 12v line to the brake light switch like they say to do on the pre "can bus" bikes I'd feel better about it.

What do y'all think? I'd appreciate any experiences y'all are willing to share.

I'm also researching oil coolers for my 2010 RKC, I don't think our bikes have CAN bus, but I could be wrong.

CANBUS started in 2014, so you don't have that. Just do as they instruct for pre-Rushmore/CANBUS bikes and you're all set.

A real tune and a set of fans for the heads will accomplish more than an oil cooler.

I took the cat out, and did a tune, I personally felt a difference, some don't. All I can add to this.

2011 FLHR, I added a Jagg 10 row oil cooler without a thermostat ( I also have a set of Jasons fans ). Never had a problem. I am in central Fl. and it gets toasty her BTW

Thanks for the replies y'all. I have a good tune and no cat, but if I get stuck in traffic in a big city somewhere that don't help but so much. For example in Lynchburg or Raleigh the thing can cause roasted nuts easy. I used to have Rinehart true duals but the noise got annoying fast. I wound up getting a decatted stock headpipe and some take off mufflers from a 2016 RGS. I love the sound and the bike runs MUCH smoother and has more low end torque than with the Rineharts. In my opinion dealing with this extra heat is a worthwhile trade.

One thing y'all brought up that got me to thinking was the thermostat. Do any of the Jagg or UltraCool units have a thermostat? I ride year round and if I ever head up into the mountains it gets pretty cold up there. In the old days on my Shovelhead I'd just put a cover over the cooler but I'd like to avoid getting into that on this bike if possible.

Thanks again for the help.

Jagg gives you a choice between a thermostat or not. I chose to go without one because of where I live but was worried about it on my first trip to Yellowstone when we were riding in the upper 30's. Again ,no issues but I had formed a cover for the fins of the cooler out of a piece of thin aluminum just in case.....

Thanks for the follow up info on that. The one thing that concerns me about the Jagg is that it just uses hose clamps instead of AN fittings like the UltraCool. I have read a couple of reviews about leaks on the Jagg at those hose connections but I don't know how prevalent that issue is. Would putting a little teflon tape on the connector before sliding the hose on help?

That being said looking at the UltraCool kit it looks like they've just got a couple of 4" computer case fans on the thing. I wonder how durable they would be after a few rides in the rain.

That's a pretty big chunk of change for me to spend, I'm hoping to get as much info as I can before ordering one or the other.

I’m using AN fittings on my jag. Also replaced the thermostat with one from Jason Ward. I’d have to go through my records to checks the specs on that since Jason is no longer in business.
