Hmmm, don't think I would want the pillion to have that in her hands, and in my ear, but hey, to each their own. Lol. My riding buddy says before helmet comms, his wife used hand signals. Thumb up for faster, thumb down for slower and middle finger for........you get the idea.

with the Cardo packtalk bold we run a group of 8, sometimes all at the same time sometimes with less of that number. once it is set up, if the people you have added to your group are in range it will automatically pair them into the group conversation, never failed to work unless someone accidently switched thiers to bluetooth mode. also i can leave my house alone and as soon as one of my buddies in my group comes into range(at say a meeting point to start a ride) it will automatically connect as well, had 8 guys and gals on the mesh without a single issue and been running them for 3+ years, mesh does work a lot better than standard bluetooth
in cardo even when your in a group you can also set up one other person to have on a private chat so you can leave the main group intercom and just talk to your spouse for a min, or from the tail to the lead for instance without the rest of the group hearing the private line
cardo works well in a half helmet with the extra kit you have to buy, but the most important part is that you have the same coms as the person you want to communicate with

Don't want to spend a ton of money but need comms with riding buddies,
Looking at Fodsports M1-3 or M15 Pro, both less than $100
But can they be used with a half helmet, how would they attach
Don't really ride that much but would be nice to relay wishes to other riders

What do your buddies use?
While most of the headset intercom units claim to have a universal intercom mode, I have found it to be about useless. The pairing it rather finicky, it requires one user to give up their phone connection, and if it drops out for any reason on your ride you need to go back through the whole pairing process again.
So I would get the headset your buddies are using.
