You can buy these caps to clean up the look when the backrest is off. Hogworkz sells them but also Amazon has em for like half the price.

the docking hardware isn't bad. If it bothers you that much. Hogworks has covers that go over the mounts when not in use.

Whats funny is that HD doesn't even call for thread locker on footboards, handlebars or the seat and those are pretty important.
Plus there are four bolts doing the job and you'd know any one of them were loose as soon as you put your back against it.
I doubt anyone is going to fall off the bike because you didn't use Red. To each their own though. Just sayin.
i don't even use any blue loctite on those. i just tighten them down to german specs (goodntite) and have never had any problem. never even had one loosen up any. but, by all means, do whatever makes you comfortable.

I was going to say that I used "Clear" locktite. Nothing... haha
