I have a 103 25,000 miles. At speed of 55 thu 70+ I hear a "ping" sound. If I speed up a little, the ping goes away until I'm back to cruise speed. If I slow down a little, the ping goes away until I reach cruising speed again. Only happens when cruising. I have checked for vacuum leaks and found none. I have installed "rocker stoppers" in the vale train. After this is when I heard the ping.
A true ping at low power settings (constant speed cruise) is rare. I would check things rattling. My son has the same year machine you have and his engine to frame link loosened on the frame end. If the engine shifted under higher power situations, the noise stopped. You might have a loose muffler bracket, the one on the bottom of the transmission side cover is another bolt that loosens frequently If an exhaust pipe has shifted enough to contact a foot board, you would probably feel that in your foot. It could be a fairing bracket loose or broken. Next time you hear it, put a finger on the brake lever, then the clutch lever and see if the noise stops with either. Try putting pressure (pulling and pushing) on the windshield/fairing. Try pushing the ends of the mufflers from side to side, then up and down. Any squeak or rattle? The heat shields on the header pipes might be squeaking. Have you added any after market equipment? Recheck that for tightness.
