I always downshift. It’s not a new concept, it’s been done for years, Harley Davidson is not magical regardless of what people think.
It does no harm to the engine, they do that.
Regarding safety it also means you are in the correct gear if you have to bug out when the vehicle behind you is coming on strong. Just like not stopping directly behind a car, one side or the other, always have an escape route.
