Time for Harley to come out with an automatic transmission.
We can't get two people to agree on how to come up to a stop with these baffling manual transmissions.
Gawd just buy a convertible sports car with an automatic transmission. Won't have to worry about falling over too. And if you continue to ride on two wheels, stay away from me.
The minute you take your foot off the gas in any vehicle you are engine braking
With a MC it happens much faster
There are signs all over aimed at 18 wheelers to not use engine braking as it makes noise
You have to down shift as you slow down to be in the proper gear to then keep going at the proper speed in the proper gear
The engine braking that those signs are referring to is telling truck drivers to not use their Jake Brake. It’s engine braking, but not as cars and MC’s know.
You actually can’t rev match with these transmissions.
Our bikes use a simple dog box transmission. There are no synchronizers, just simple dogs. There’s no active neutral between gears, they spring load from one to the next.
An automotive transmission, with synchronizers and an active neutral between each gear can be rev matched. You put the transmission into neutral, release the clutch, use the throttle to rev up the input shaft until the gear speeds match, and downshift. Or, just let the synchronizers do it, as they’re designed to.
Automobile transmissions with or without synchros can be rev matched just as automatic transmissions can and as our Harley’s can. You’re talking about “double clutching” by going into neutral and spinning up the input shaft to eliminate grinding into the next gear. Rev matching is matching your RPM’s to the gear your going into based on the speed of your vehicle. Most important while going into a corner while slowing and downshifting, and not letting the rear tire wash out.
Its okay to decelerate with the drive gear engaged, but I wouldn’t use the engine/transmission to slow down… thats what brakes are for!
That’s probably what the Asplundh truck on Route 19 going down the mountain thought. I could smell his brakes burning. It doesn’t harm the engine to use engine braking, especially if you rev match. It’s absolutely essential on going down a mountain.
