Road King 2006 Starter Issues - Jack Shaft?
Now it cranks intermittently and spins like it is not engaging. It is doing the whirring thing and did not do that before i replaced the starter clutch... It was just clunky before.
Could this be the jackshaft?
I used a new Harley Starter Clutch Drive..
I'm stumped before i pull the primary off one more time...l.
thanks,
Ch
A sprag clutch locks up solid. Can't slip. Now if you kept starter motor switch in after gas motor starts, the big ring gear the starter gear is running faster then the starter.
That runs the starter gear the other way running the internal roller pins down . That disconnects it from starter. (Like the rear hub on a 10 speed bike)
Harley's are usually too noisy to hear that. Cars are the same. Prevents blowing up starter armature.
Maybe your new part is bad. My guess is it's the battery or the starter solenoid big contact.
Why did you replace it. Starter bangs are most of the time from low CCA from worn out batteries left on maintenance chargers too much of the time.
You end up getting your last start at home or all kinds of little start problems along the way.
I sure don't see big picture yet from your post.
So I always start with simple first before we get complicated.

You can look up an exploded view of your starter Dang It
I probably won't mention it but did you find the little %$&#@ ball # 11 during the tear down.
Was told if not in there that ain't good.
Found it and had to ask where the H^$ it went.
Tore back down and put in

My battery is good.
It seems its spinning well but not engaging. I would hope the part is not bad but maybe so.
Sounds like the jack shaft might not be spinning. I might go back in an retorque that and see if thats the culprit.

Yea i put the little ball in the starter. I bought a kit from Harley that had all of that.
Thanks for your response.
I might take the primary back off and see if the jack shaft is engaging. sounds like it's free wheeling.

Here was my Solve..
I pulled the Primary cover back off and ........ My Dumbass Error. I'm posting this in case anyone else might need some help or might make the same error i did.
I put the Jackshaft Gear on backwards!! In my excitement of getting the starter back in and in my haste I flipped part 17 backwards. See Pix below.
It would start the bike but eventually unscrewed the jack shaft bolt completely creating the 'Whir".
I noticed when i was torqueing the Jack Shaft Bolt it did not seem to want to Torque correctly / therefore i was bending the Thrust Washer inward on the gear..
Turned the gear over / purchased the two new washers / Toqued it down and i'm good to go..
Sometimes it pays to slow down and refer the maual more than once.
Be kind, i already admitted it was a Dumb *** Move on my part. LOL...
Doing it twice i still saved $$ over what dealership would have charged...
Stay safe,
Ch.
