Default First post: New Harley owner questions

Just put a slick 21 Street Glide Special with 2k miles on it on lay away and of course I'm already investing hours into shopping for add ons to make it mine.

The wife needs a back rest which also means docking hardware but my question is: If i want to add a tour pack at some point, will that use the same docking hardware as the sissy bar?
I think the answer is yes, but the tour pack will need special mounting hardware to fit the docking hardware on the bike, right?

I'm pretty new to Harleys and stuff but I think I got that right......let me know.

thank you.

My new ride.

Welcome!

If you add a tour pak later, you’ll simply remove the “detachable” passenger backrest from the docking hardware, and add the tour pak in its place. It would be mounted on a quick detach (“detachables”) tour pak rack/base, to the docking hardware.

Very typical and routine.

Yes, the docking hardware is the same for both. The tour pack will require nothing special, just the mount for it that the tour pack will bolt to. You can find all these products on https://www.harley-davidson.com/us/e...torcycle-parts, including the instructions for them.

Congratulations on the new bike but I'm really curious about how the lay-a-way works for a motorcycle that costs north of 20k. I remember when I was a kid my mother would drag us around weekly to all the department stores like K - mart and pay on a lay-a-way...I learned later that was how she was able to get us presents for Xmas. Interested in how that works on a big ticket item. Sorry I didn't add to the topic but those other guys have you covered.

You can add a tour pack later and still use the sissy bar backrest you buy now. See here Comparing Tour Packs - Harley Davidson Forums (hdforums.com)
You will need the 4-point docking hardware, sissy bar, and sissy bar pad.

and here you can see the tourpack I added to my bike and everything that is needed: Amazon TCMT Chopped Tour Pack - Harley Davidson Forums (hdforums.com)
You will need the tourpack and removable tourpack mount.

Welcome from Spartan Country, Michigan!
I tell a lot of new comers to the forum to get: Factory Service manual and the Parts manual. Take to an office supply store and have them put a spiral binder in place of the glued binder. That will let the manuals lay flat on your bench. Get a three ring binder and record all your maintenance, repairs, accessories, etc. This will be a great reminder of what was done when. And great material to pass along to the new owner should you sell and upgrade. Also know how large your fuel tank is, a rough idea of your range per tank, and record your fuel usage. I have an app called Simply Auto that I record all my fuel used. I use the odometer and use the fuel gage as reference only. I reset the odometer to zero on fill ups, and I know I can safely get 200 miles on a tank on around town riding, and upwards of 230+ on trips.
