FYI.... This was shared on another forum from a guy who runs a shop in the Midwest.

It was the first I had heard of shimming the newest version of the Twin Cam Comp (with the oil scoop)..

@Pantera99 If your interested in my saga, go to the Dyna forum here. I just did an update. When my bike gets the cough, it also smells like bad smelling gas. Not raw gas, just a really weird stinky gas.

Jason.

I read down through there and didn't see where you took it all apart. Your sprocket may look like this. With Harley's uneven firing and always a little hunting in rpm it makes an uneven sound, sound worse. Doesn't hurt anything but the noise will drive you crazy unless you just ignore it.

Tension (from shim stack) looks fine. It's not going too far up the ramp for your driving style. It's doing its job.

Poor hot starts with kickback throwing the starter gear out is a worn-out battery with low cranking amps dropping voltage so low, that the solenoid drops the contacts out. Or the motor just kicking the weak starter from low-cranking amps? Keeping a battery on a maintenance charger all the time gets a good cold start leaving home. Starting a Hot start with heated leftover fuel vapor left in the intake is different. Put a volt meter on the maintenance charger and monitor those hot starts. If it's dropping battery voltage below 9.7 or so, you need a new battery

Did find a left lower bolt was a bit loose. Anyway went for a spin & seems fine but didn't get fully hot. Definitely gonna look into that head temp sensor, occasionally the idle wants to rise too. Hell it's an '09 & through all the summers here a failing sensor wouldn't be hard to believe. Will look into the shims as well. Thanks for all the help!!

Idle issue. Might want to clean the IAC and see if that helps. Get some TB cleaner and pull your air cleaner. You'll see where the IAC hole is. Spay some in there and turn the kill switch on, then cycle the key to make the IAC move. Might help?

Pretty sure he has an '09 Touring bike, so there is no IAC.

Good tip. I remember once shutting her down before the idle settled & I guess it then 'learns' the new idle & I had to go through the idle reset procedure. Damn technology!! Always had carbed bikes before but for cold starts fuel injection is certainly nice.

I installed the current style comp on my previous bike and after a 1700 mile trip the comp was rattling and loose. Installed shims and all was smooth and quiet again. As was recommended above, when installing a new comp install the shims also and avoid having to go back in later.
