Dude, I've been selling Loctite for nearly thirty years and would NEVER use red unless the fastener is one inch or larger. These products really all do the same thing...they cure in the unexposed threads closing off the inherent clearance between mating parts. Blue (242) is the best "everyday" threadlocker to use, even if you are sealing a large fastener. The only way to remove the red/high strength threadlockers is to heat to about 450 degrees F or break the fastener. A couple of other things to keep in mind: these products have a shelf life...if it's been in your buddy's tool box for ten years, it probably won't work. Also, even if it is new product, shake it thoroughly. There are newer products too such as stick threadlockers which don't let the ingredients separate and they don't run all over the place. They have a gel threadlocker which is only available at certain distributors which is pretty cool as well. Ask your local Loctite distributor about these products to get the best advice for use. Loctite has a lot of excellent stuff...IF used properly. I would be happy to answer any questions also...hope this helps.
