The online parts finder doesn't show the sizes, so I would just match up the good fitting, male or female, to a tap/die or thread chaser and go from there.

If you get into a bind, it looks like the OEM parts, albeit not cheap, are still available...

Another idea.... I am not sure how hardware stores work on your side of the pond, but many here have good hardware (nuts/bolts/fasteners) sections and will have some sort of thread gauge. You could use the gauge to find out exactly what thread you are dealing with, then only have to buy that specific tap...

Good luck..

The threaded bung hole on fuel tank is many times not level.
If someone attempts to start threading the connector with a tool instead of by hand then a cross thread is very possible.
A solution is sometimes achieved by using a nail with a large fat head and then running that nail head from deep inside to outside along thread.
This is done in order to straighten a slightly deformed thread.
Then returning to hand tighten the connector until almost seated before using a hand tool.
No force should be required to install.

We tried to thread the connector by hand but it was already chewed up, so are you saying to use a flat headed nail to tidy up the thread instead of using a thread tap?

Also check the thread and pitch.
I thought it was something like 18mm x 1.50 on some units...
Like a simple to get sparkplug or oxygen sensor thread chaser.
Again, use your hand and not a tool to address as much as possible.
Quarter turn and back off, remove, clean..repeat.
No need to guess if you have a part in your hand that can be measured.
A quality auto parts should have the ability to measure that piece and sell you the correct thread chaser.
You would want to use a thread chaser and NOT a tap.
You want to clean-up the situation and not create another problem.

Do NOT use a tap.
For almost no cost... a nail head from inside out.
