Bought the bike in 2005, first Electric start and first windshield...love it. I do not ride so much any more. Would like to upgrade. Looked at other new bikes. The R.K. is the one I keep looking at. Why not upgrade what I have? Rode the new engines, great, but another payment??? Would like info on what I can do or upgrade what I have. I have less than 13000 miles on mine. Rode a 76 FL all over Germany, France and Spain in the 80's and 90's. Rode a friends newer EVO and new I wanted newer.
Will try to post video over Sun Shine Skyway Bridge later. Let me know if you have info that will help.
I believe the touring frames were updated/ improved in 2009. Plus the 2007 and newer bikes have the upgraded hydraulic cam chain tensioner. Just swap for a newer bike. There are a ton of used bikes out there for sale.
The motor will fit. The only place questionable is the left side swingarm support might hit the primary. IMO the early frames are better than the later ones after the suspension is setup correctly..

Why not just upgrade the existing 88ci motor? Talk to a local engine builder, Im sure there are many options, you only have 13k miles on a 21 year old bike. Thats like 700 miles a year, motor should be in great shape with regular maintenance.

I agree, that motor and transmission is great. I always had 74cu motors and four speeds with rear chains and oilers for many years when I was younger, no bike for 30 years until my son gifted me a bike, a 2001 RK with 40,000 miles 8 years ago. Now I couldnt be happier with an 88 cubic inch five speed with a rear belt (no oiler) and old enough I can do any work or maintenance.
