Default Steering head adjustment question

My dealer tells me that they check the steering head by making the handle bars swing back and forth x amount of times. They say they do this with the fairing (SG) attached. I thought I read somewhere that this test is to be performed with the entire fairing removed.
Does anyone know how to properly perform this test?

Is that the test where you put bike on a lift and push steering in one direction and it should bounce back in a pattern of some sort? if doesnt then steering adjustment is needed or something like that?

Streetrunner, this is the test you are looking for:

1) Wheels off the ground andon a level surface.
2)Turnbars to the left steering stop and thenlet go.
3) the adjustment is correct if the wheel swings full right, then left and back to the right.
Note: the second swing to the left will not go to the stop and the third swing back to the right will be a partial swing stoppping at random. Less than 3 swings = too tight and more than 3 swings = too loose.

Thanks Streeter but is this done with the fairing attached to the bike? The dealer says they think so but I'm thinking I read somewhere that the fairing should be removed. I don't have a whole lot of confidence in dealers. I feel better relying on the responses from this forum.

You are correct, the fairing must remain on as well the bike must be stock form with no accessories bolted on that would affect the balance, weight positioning etc.

Yes it will stay on. Keep in mind this a static test to set-up steering response. Any increase (removing fairing) or decrease in weight to the front end will changethe swing momentum resulting in an inaccurate adjustment.
