I had the 'cheaper' HD one and for me, it was miserable. Now I am 6'1" it simply was not made for taller folks. However, the mods that Baltimorebook describes above would have probably helped.
I , like many of you was not pleased with the position of the rider backrest. I also was not comfortable heating the rods & bending them back. I ride a Road King 08 & was puzzled by the engineering that went into this device. Either they are trying to make one device fit several types of bikes (& not doing a very good job at least on the road king) or they are assuming that everyone stays with stock bars & is leaning a bit forward. So, I read on a post about turning the bracket around the way. that the instructions say not to & it works great! I was able to move it back a notch & position it perfectly. I may or may not weld a tab on the front to anchor to the bike. I weigh @ 160# & really do not put undue stress on the rest.
This is my first post although I have been reading this forum since buying my bike. This forum is awesome! I have learned so much & avoided potential pitfalls. I just bought some chubby 517 bars to be installed. Reading posts on this forum really helped me make a decision. Surprisingly, the dealer was not very helpful with this even though they stand to benefit most.
I don't have a bad back, but my bike came with the adjustable riders backrest and let me tell you something... It is mother f'ing comfortable! Holy hell, I had no idea it would be that nice. Wow...
Is the adjustable backrest easity removable? I bought the standard one because the dealer said it was not easily removable.
I assume you mean to remove it when you sell the bike? If so it's a 15 min job to remove. I just took mine off a couple days ago. Your dealer don't know what he's talking about 3 bolts to remove the bracket, fish the cable through and remove 1 other bolt. No problem

If you are talking about just poping it out, then yes, it actually pops out easier than the non-adjustable one.
I think my sales guy told me the same thing (that is wasn't)
then I saw a guy in the parking lot with one and he showed how easy it was to take out.
