Wonder if my dealer will give a refund since I got the IDS the first week it was out and paid full price?

Got mine installed Friday. After 100 miles I can't really say whether it got quieter or not as I really don't know if I have the issue. I do know that the bike runs smoother down the highway - seems like less vibration in general. It also shifts great and cruises up nicely from a dead stop. I would also spend the money on this one if I had to do it again. This would definately help on a long trip.

Why is this thing not applicable to earlier models? Like an 05 as someone asked..............I don't understand why it won't work!
I believe it's a belt size problem. Changed in '07.
Ok, forgive me for being slow, but couldn't you just change the belt to go with this?
I'm no expert but... you'd have to change primary sprocket along with IDS sprocket. And could be some clearance issues?? Keep watching forum and you'll probably find someonethat figures it out.
It's also a 66 tooth sprocket vs. 70 on previous years.

B.S. That's not the point.
Someone spending $20K should expect something better.
it doesn't matter if you spent 20k or 200k, there is always gonna be something that you can do to make it better.

Dan B, If you can find out from your dealer where he saw the $100 discount from the moco it would be greatly appreciated so we can point our dealers in the right direction. They seem to need some assistance locating it. Thanks.

My dealer was originally looking in the September web site for Harley (apparently the one that they use amongst themselves), and there was nothing in there about the IDS upgrade. However, when I told him the program was from 10/1 to 3/31...he must of known where to look, as he called me during the day and left a mesg. on my voice mail that he had found the program. It was under the program they call "elbow grease". Ask them to check their site for that info.

I think this is true, for me anyway. I could find ways to improve a Ferrari, to fit my idea of "better" anyway.

The straight-cut gears (greatly more-so than the helical-cut ones, which actually slide sideways across each other as they interact, but will still exhibit the phenomenon) will chatter as they transmit the power. The higher-frequency chattering is what we love to call "whine". As the load transfers from one tooth face to its counterpart, the pressure on the far end will echo back after a slight delay which will cause a minor attempt at over-running the gearset as if you were decelerating. Of course it doesn't really over-run, but it effectively subtracts from the forward force that minute amount so a cyclic action ensues at a higher harmonic. Since there is imperfect (even in "perfectly" cut and matched gears) mesh, the "lash", it will actually bounce a little. The IDS dramatically reduces that "echo" of pressure coming back from the far end of the drivetrain, thereby muffling the whine.

Okay, so that's an imperfect description, but it's good enough for this venue, right?
Quite a good explanation, actually. I suspected that the whine and clatter were related, as the whine does have a slight clatter sound to it, and I can hear it even now if I really try. Even so, hearing it is an effort and in a real-world scenario (stereo, wind, etc.) it is not noticed at all.

To those who yearn for IDS on their earlier bikes, plus '06 Dynas and '07 all non-touring models, I think that with the popularity of IDS on touring rigs it'll at least be available for the latter soon. I'm not sure why earlier bikes would need it, actually.

I've got 400 miles on mine , and am happy with the change. Much smoother , as others have said 60 in 6th with no clatter. The only negative I noticed is on 2 tanks of fuel gas mileage has dropped by 3 mpg ( to 40 with a 103 stageII) no big deal to get 12-15 miles less out of a tank. Subectively it almost feels like a taller rear end as acceleration is improved.
