Confused
I'm thinking about trading up to a big twin next season, but I'm kind of confused about what to get. I really like the look of the Street Glide, but it's not really set up well for two-up riding, or long trips. On the other hand, the EG Classic seems like too much bike for my daily commute or regular trips around town. I don't want the tour pack unless I'm going on trips with my chick, which might be about 10% of my actual riding. But she really loves the comfort and security of it when riding two-up, and we'd need the space, anyway.
I was thinking that the most cost-effective deal would be to get the EG Classic, then make the Tour Pack detachable. I thought that would be cheaper than trying to add a tour pack to the SG. But, it looks like either way, it's a thousand bucks to a) detach and rewire the tour pack on the EG, or b) to add a detachable tour pack to the SG.
Now, I don't need the radio, but I'd kinda like it, and the all-silver engine of the EG Standard looks sort of ugly, so I'm not all that keen on it. But the entry price is a lot lower, which gives me some financial space to make changes to it, which means it might be the best choice.
Any suggestions?
One of my ridin buddies has a streetglide and has a detachable tourpak.He just put lowers on it and and loves the look.Once you have a radio you wont understand how you got along without it.I dont use mine all the time but find its on most of the time.
I couldnt find a classic when I got my SG. I wanted to get the detach kit, and just take off the travel trunk as needed. Couldnt find one, so ended up with what I got. Pulled off the stock seat, and went with a mustang seat and backrest. Pretty happy with what I have now. Can get the flh airshocks that are longer pretty cheap on ebay, if you want to improve the ride. Kinda wish I had the extra lights in front though. Either one is good, you may be limited with what you find!
i will just give you my .02 from personal experience.
I had a Road King standard initially, because I liked the hard bags and the removable windshield. Well, when i actually started doing more touring i needed extra space for clothes, etc, so i got a luggage rack, back rest and tour bag.
Well, once my wife started touring w/ me (2 up) i needed even more room. So I got a ultra. After a few months I got the detacable tour pak rack, but i think i only removed it one time. So i put the permanent mount back on adn sold the detach tack.
Now, i ride my bike to work 80% of the time...only a 15 mile commute each way. But the tour pak really comes in handy for picking up things on the way home. I even did a weekends worth of grocery shopping one friday and put it all on my bike. Cant do that with out the tour pak.
Everyone is different and wants different things in a bike, but i bet if you get a tour pak, detachable or permanent, you will keep it on the bike more than off.
Once you get used to the comfort of a fairing and the enjoyment of a radio, you will also never want anything different. I even have a pull behind piggy backer trailer that i use all the time.

Takes all of 5 minutes to remove or install the tourpak if you add the detachable mount. unscrew the ant. wire and the the lights are already on a plug so just unplug and tuck wire under seat. Classic is way better choice than SG for two up riding, SG has lowered rear shocks that give a stiffer ride.
I got a SG with the detachable tour pack with no lights. I no longer ride 2 up and like the ride on the open highway. I still have my soft tail standard for local rides. I was going to trade it but couldn't get the money I wanted so I kept it. Good luck on your choice hope you find what you and your lady want.
I have a road king custom and everytthing is detachable. I can switch from a long range cruiser to a stripped down boulevard bike in 10 minutes,. It is very versatile and the tunes are a plus!

We used a 06 Cop Glide for the basis of our "Convetable" touring/crusing ride.
Chopped Windshield changes with 12" in about 5 minutes, Detachable Sissy Bar takes about as long to add or remove.
Bags can be installed or removed in about the same time.
Added matching Mustang Cop Passanger seat for time that passanger is along.

If the Silver engine bothers you then don't even consider it. Believe me you will regret it and then it's to late. You will never be 100% happy if you settle for something just because it cost less. Just my 2cents...............
