Default Bike won't start..

Can't get the bike to run. It started and idled for about a minute, then the rpm's went up to 3000 +/-. The rpm's stayed up until I got on the throttle a little bit and then she died. Started her up again and the same thing happened. Now it won't even start. It has been several weeks since I've ridden it. (ashamed to admit that) Not sure what to do next. Any ideas? Thanks!

Got gas......?

Seriously, maybe junk in the gas tank, or an injector problem.....

If you have gas, it is probably an injector problem. My daughter has a new sportster and it wouldn't start. the Dealership replaced the injector. No problems since.

It's got about half a tank of gas. I thought maybe water in the gas so I disconnected the 2 fuel lines from the bottom left side of the tank. The one more towards the front of the bike, I was only able to get a table spoon or so of gas. The other one right next to it but closer to the seat I was able to get enough to put into a glass. Didn't see any signs of water. I think that the gas is fine. I'm puzzled why the other gas line didn't really supply any gas. Maybe some junk in the bottom of the tank clogging it????

did your fuel lines have pressure on them....like spew everywhere when you disconnected them? If not the fuel pump is out.
The proper procedure for disconnecting those lines is pull the fuel pump fuse (now thats something to check) and crank the bike. This relieves the pressure.

So it raced up to 3000 rpm by itself and stayed there until you opened the throttle, and did this twice? When you crank it now can you tell if you're getting any fire?

I've had bad fuel injectors before (plugged from bad fuel), but the engine would try to start, just sputtered and never would catch on. But it sounds like yours is not even doing that.

Well first what did you do to it after it last ran?
But it could be numerous things.
1. check the gas....good/bad
2. check battery and cables (both ends)
3. remove air filter and outer housing.
there is a cold start ISC motor there, watch to see if it activates.
Most are a small cylinder about 1" diameter and about 1 1/2 long
mounted on top of throttle body that opens and closes the the throttle
during cold starts and during idle warmup
4. Check and see if any diagnostic codes are stored.

Does it turn over but just won't start?
The older bikes had a angle sensor and cam sensor mounted in the cam chest cover. One or both could of failed. Or the crank sensor.

The high idle would most likely be explained by the ISC motor above.
Then you also have the TPS (throttle posistion sensor)
If any of the sensors have failed or are out of limits in their operating parameters a trouble code should be set.
Plus what others have already mentioned as to fuses and fuel pump etc.

Only one of the fuel lines had pressure on it. I disconnected the first one and very little gas came out. I started to disconnect the second one, unscrewed it about half way and enough gas came out that I was able to put into a glass and check for water. When I turn the ignition on I can hear what I am assuming is the fuel pump.
