I couldn't imagine storing my bike away for winter. There are always days the temps get over 40.

Yup, I put her away in a friends heated garage that is kept between 65 and 72 degrees. I only put sta-bil in the tank and put a bed sheet over it to cover it, but I will go over sometime this winter and wash/wax the bike. When I take it out of storage I always ride it until it is almost out of fuel, then I re-fuel - just something I always did with my Mustang too.

When I had the V-Star and then the Sportster I just did the recommended long term storage procedure with those for the winter and kept them in the shed on the mcl. jack and covered over.

Now, with the RK I have decided to store itat my indy's shop (for a fee of course) wherethere's a constant temp and he changes the fluids, keeps the battery charged and moves it around from time to time so as to keep the tires from flatspotting. For me, it's money well spent for the peace of mind and I can go visit throughout the winter.

Just wondering what most of you do with your ride during the winter months in preping it for storage.
What do you do to set your bike up for storage?
Ah park it in the garage with mah jacket on the saddle.

ORIGINAL: ToadsUltra07
Trickle chager?
Yep. It trickles back up next time ah start it.....

ORIGINAL: ToadsUltra07
Fuel stable?
Usually. Then again, it don't usually stay in the tank more'n a week afore ah top it off again.

ORIGINAL: ToadsUltra07
What about the tires?
Yep - got two of 'em!!

ORIGINAL: ToadsUltra07
Cover over the bike?
Nah - gits in the way the next day when ah'm gonna go fer a ride...

ORIGINAL: ToadsUltra07
If your garage is not heated, will that matter on any of the bike parts?
<worried look> Is thar some kinda ASPCMC out thar now?!??

Okay....now that ah've funned ya, lemme try ta give ya some "straight" answers. Now, bear in mind that the above answers more closely fit mah situation, since it's rare that more'n a week goes by whar ah can't git out on the road, but the below is based on many years of observations of yer fellow yankees, an' the stuff they gotta do.

Trickle chager?
Many do - but many others dislike havin' ta buy a "special-use" charger like that, so what some do is ta use a regular charger on a "low output" (2-amp) setting, then screw in an adapter to their garage door opener (where the light bulb normally goes). They've found that through normal use of the garage door, it kept the battery "topped off" without overcharging...

ORIGINAL: ToadsUltra07
Fuel stable?
Without fail! I use Stabil in mah yard and other gas-powered equipment, and have never had a problem with stale gas.

ORIGINAL: ToadsUltra07
What about the tires?
If possible, ah'd be inclined ta ensure they're aired properly an' check 'em from time to time. Nowadays, there really isn't any need ta block 'em off the floor.

ORIGINAL: ToadsUltra07
Cover over the bike?
ONLY if the cover breathes well! It's good to keep excess dust off, but if it traps moisture in ANY way, it can be disasterous.

Ah've heard it both ways - the biggest concern would be if the metals could "sweat" from a combination of temperature swings an' humidity.

I'm in the Northeast and last winter we had a warm day and I pulled the cover off my bike and about had a heart attack! It was covered with condensation. We have an unheated garage. Fixed that problem. Bought a low profile trailer and have the bike in it in the garage on a battery tender.

Heated storage????? Depends where you live. It's not how hot or how cold but how great the temperature excursions are that the chrome will see due to weather changes. The different rates of expansion and contraction btween the chrome and the base metal will, over the long run, create those hairline cracks in the chrome that eventually rust. It may take a few years or many years but large temperature changes take their toll over time.

Constant, low humidity environment is the best for winter storage. I'd keep mine in the living room if it were up to me. LOL

Just my .02/experience.

Great topic for us in Canada.
Like to know if anyone starts their bike during storage or if anyone here uses fogging oil.
