As said above, 1-2 mins and roll. You can help things a bit by running synthetics, if your not already. Regardless of the protection arguments, the synthetics win hands down on low temp flow.

The 74 " Big twins ran thecoolest
When they went to the 80 " it was not bad.. I had a few
The 88 inch was hot... I had 3
The 96 is hotter.. Ive got 1
It just makes sense.. Liquid cooling is the future ( sorry to say)

For the newer fuel injected bikes, your main concern is how it drives when engine is cold.....Both my '07's want to race the engine while still cold....That makes it a safety concern while doing tight maneuvers in parking lots and stop n go while turning tightly.....a minute or two later and all is good, tho.

You city dwellers and those who live in apts and condos might wanna reconsider allowing bike to idle several minutes especially if you leave in early AM and have modded your exhaust. Your neighbors might slash your tires if you wake them early every morning with several minutes of "patatoe-patatoe"....so if you live in a packed hood and your engine is loud andraces till warm, you might wanna pull out first thing, then allow her to warm up a little farther from your neighbors while you don helmet n gloves and get your jeans packed in you crotch just right.

Does it harm the engine to drive it cold?.....Well yeah it can, depending on several things already mentioned......Years of testing has shown that the greatest ammount of engine wear occurs when engine is first started and cold...so if you have 100K on a vehicle thathas seen nothing but cold starts and short runs, then it will be worn out compared to the same vehicle with same milage that was used to commute on hwy for long distances.

Engine wear is most severeduring moments before it reaches operating temp. This is because parts have not expanded and reached their designed clearances.....Whatever oil you use is designed to lubricate best within designed engine operating clearances and temps....So yeah, syns alway work best compared to dino stuff because they flow and lubricate better at lower and higher temps.
