Somewhere in this forum someone went to a lot trouble to explain with pictures and instructions the complete procedure. If using the inserts from H-D it is definitely wise to tap the old holes in the fairing first. Slot end of inserts goes in first as the screw when it is turned into insert acts to spread the insert and make the fit even tighter. The insert is screwed into place with a 1/4" bolt with a nut on it to lock the insert so it turns with the bolt until it is flush with the top of the insert hole.
