Idle curiousity
The kickstand became the jiffy stand at about the same time that
the sissybar became the passenger backrest
and
the crash bars became engine guards
and
the choke became the enricher.
"Sissybar" went out about the same time that guys could no longer ride another guy without being labelled "gay," or at least become suspect. Two men could ride on one MC in 1965 and retain their straight sexual preference in the eyes of society, but appearently not today. Ride another guy to the HD shop to pick up his bike only at the risk of your good social standing! And don't forget the "buddy seat," which is no longer applicable since guys can't ride guys anymore, and everyone knows a "buddy" is usually someone of the same sex. It's now called a "passenger seat" or "pillion pad," which has no such gender implication. I'm surprised they don't force the gender enforcement by calling it a "opposite-sex seat."
"Crashbar" is too negative, and implies that it protects against crashes. Read the manual and you'll find out they claim it isn't for protection in crashes. If they did and someone got hurt in a crash...well, you get the picture. (Hint: lawyers)
"Choke" to some who aren't familiar with the historical meaning of the word may imply they're doing something harmful to the engine, and "enricher" sounds more like what the device actually does. When so called, they probably got lots of phone calls from people who were worried about harming their new bike.
Common sense and no implications for the lawyers to get hold of.
