Default "LOW TECH" IDS

I am restoring a 1974 SR100 Harley Baja for my father. Low and behold I removed the rear sprocket and what did I see? IDS. Even has a nickle palted (chrome) cylinder liner. I wonder if Harley put that on to cover up their poor design in 1971-73. That's sound engineering fo 1974. Them Italian's think of everything.

It is low tech, no question about it. This is not a new idea, HD has had IDS onbikes in the past. In fact many of the metric bikes use something similiar. HD puts it on their '08's and they sell it to the public like it's something new. Funny how that works, isn't it?I wonder what they'll come up with next? Maybe some new fangled invention....like a V-twin engine or something!

I have not seen the construction of this new IDS, but I will say to those who would remember that the IDS system in the 80's; If you were any kind of aggressive rider you were replacing these in parts in about 5000 mile intervals...

I want to mention tho instead of at thefront now it is the rear easier to repair

I will post some pic's when finished. It was sold at our dealership originally in '74. IT was set up for flattrack by my father and still in the same condition.

For the others that posted, I have read several post where people think Harley come out wiht this to cover up their poor transmission design. They also say they introduced it and said it was new technology and tried to sell it to the public as such. Incorrect. It was and update to a current design like all manufactures do. It was never introduced as new technology or even made that big of deal at the show. i was simply tring to "spoof" some claims by others.
