Default Split the fairing

Center insert kept pulling out so I went to HD and bought the repair insert.

According to what I read, and what the tech said, I was to put a screw and spacer on it, and slowly screw it in to the fairing, slot first. Drilling not required. Well, I made it about two turns and a nice crack ran about an inch down the side of the post.

What to do?Some JB Weld and cram the old insert in there. Don't know if it will stay with the nice long crack on the side.

It's aCustom painted fairing as well so I gotta try and fix it.

Well I bought a plastic welding repair unit.
I know it doesn't help you. Will be practicing next month with these type of repairs.

But for now, use some coarse sandpaper around the stud area and scuff it real good.
Get a thing of ABS glue at hardware store.
Repair the crack with this. Let set couple hours.
VERY gently drill the hole so the old or new insert will go in snugly without recracking the hole.
Now mix up the JB weld coat the inside of the repaired hole with it and outside of the insert.
Gently work the insert into the hole.
Now apply a neat but liberal amount of JB weld around the outside to reinforce.

This should do it.

Go to your local body shop. Mine had some super stuff they use to fix rubber bumpers. Used it on my sport bike fairing I had. 1 hour set up time. If it doesn't work my body shop had some stuff they attached patch panels on with, an epoxy that's as strong as weld!!!! It took 24 hrs. to set up. Check your shops I am sure they have some stuff you can buy or they probably even dab some on there for little of nothing like mine did(free). Let us know what you do!

Try SEM #39747. This stuff can be used as a bonder, filler & you can also mix in some fiberglass hair to add strength. If it is a hidden or internal boos that split, I would grind the crack into a "V" & fill to original dimensions with the SEM. Then cut some small strips of fiberglass roving/weave & apply a coat of SEM, then wrap with a strip. let set & repeat a few layers & finish off with a a coat of SEM. I think the inner fairings/dash area is ABS & the outer used to be SMC or structural molding compound. The newer ones, 04 & later I think, may use GTX Nylon for the outer. That is what they switched to for the bags & trunk. If so the jury is still out as to workable repair methods.
BTW the SEM is not that expensive but the mixing & dispensing gun is. I've seen people just fore go the gun & mixing tips, stick one side in an appropriate sized caulk gun & mix by eye on cardboard with a stirrer.
